The Fitness manager is responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing the fitness programming for the wellness center including the development of the annual business plan and financial targets for the fitness department along with recruitment, hiring and oversight of the fitness/ training, group exercise, and aquatics staff to ensure that the employees work as a team in achieving the department's and the facility's mission, client/ member/employee satisfaction and financial goals. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assist wellness center director in developing the fitness department's annual business plan and financial targets.
Manage the daily, weekly, and monthly revenue activities of the department so as to enable the facility to achieve its fitness- revenue target objective including revenues from memberships, corporate and clinical integration programs, personal training, small and large group training, aquatics programming, and other revenue streams outside of memberships.
Control expenses including but not limited to salaries, equipment, and maintenance.
Responsible for hiring, development, and discipline of fitness staff as needed.
Responsible for assigning tasks to fitness staff that best fits their areas of strength while addressing areas of weakness with ongoing education and mentoring.
Assign overtime work as needed to meet the goals of the wellness center.
Oversee fitness staff in regards to member satisfaction, guest excellence, teamwork with each other and other members of the wellness center team and hospital departments.
Oversee fitness staff in regards to achieving productivity benchmarks as noted in job descriptions including but not limited to personal training, small group training, aquatics, and clinical integration programs, member orientations, assessments, reassessments.
Responsible for ensuring adequate fitness floor coverage and aquatics coverage to meet the staffing requirements of center hours and member needs.
Keep informed and current in new developments in the field of fitness and wellness. Ensure continuing education and creativity of self and fitness staff to keep programming fresh and new.
Evaluate fitness programs and suggest modifications, expansion, or discontinuation of certain programs/services based on financial efficacy.
Suggests, ensures and encourages additional certification of fitness staff as needed to provide programming that is safe, current and appropriate for wellness center members to maintain current programming and provide new programming to ensure retention of present members and recruitment of new members and to serve the needs of special populations.
Ensure that all fitness staff are current in CPR and AED certifications
Maintain current licensure and certifications, obtain additional certifications as deemed appropriate and necessary by wellness center director
Holds regular meetings with fitness staff.
Identify individual and group learning needs and provide for necessary instruction and learning opportunities.
Assist membership/marketing manager and group fitness coordinator in developing, implementing and evaluating quarterly, bi- annual and/ or annual member satisfaction surveys and lead action plan to address results in collaboration with the wellness center director.
Oversee, assist with and monitor new member orientations, assessments, reassessments.
Design new member assessments based on member age, disease process, limitations.
Oversee and assist staff as needed in developing exercise programs for all new members which may include but is not limited to strength, cardiovascular, flexibility, agility, balance, proprioceptive training, general nutritional counseling, general stress management counseling and referral to appropriate professionals as needed which may include physical therapists, dietitians, psychologists, nursing, and physicians.
Assist fitness staff and oversee that each member has the opportunity to be re-evaluated quarterly to ensure that the member is meeting their fitness and wellness goals.
Serves on Wellness Center multi-disciplinary teams/ committees as needed
Assists in development and implementation of member retention efforts including follow-up phone calls, letters, emails and any other associated means of communication as needed- ensures that fitness staff is doing their part in member retention by engaging each individual with a service attitude and getting to know each member by name and on a professionally personal level that brings that member into a sense of family with wellness center staff and members of the center. Ensure that the fitness staff is helping and encouraging each member to engage with other members of the center through group exercise, fitness competitions, and health educational classes as appropriate for that individual member.
Oversee members and fitness staff in ensuring that each member has a good and memorable experience each visit that they have to the center to ensure compliance, positive wellness/ fitness outcomes and ongoing membership to the facility.
Works with all members of the wellness center staff to ensure clinical integration with the various services of the wellness center.
Responsible for responding to all emergency situations per facility policy and procedure and ensures that all fitness staff are responding as well.
Responsible for programming that is scientifically and medically sound, creative and attune to the needs and desires of members to bring ancillary revenue streams into the wellness center.
Responsible for ensuring the maintenance, preventative maintenance, upkeep of equipment and cleanliness of the cardiovascular and strength areas and aquatics areas of the wellness center to ensure the area is clean, well-maintained and safe for the user
Conduct a walk-through at the beginning of the day, during the shift and at the end of the day checking for maintenance, hazardous conditions, and safety factors that need attention and keep a log of those items
Submit work orders for items needing attention and address items that need immediate attention immediately.
Assist Wellness Center Director and other members of the Wellness center staff in achieving and maintain Medical Fitness Association certification.
Perform annual performance evaluations and periodic informal performance evaluations of personal trainers, exercise specialists, group fitness coordinator, clinical integration coordinator, and aquatics staff
Ensures that the center is meeting all safety and security regulations as required by WTH, the State, MFA, and any other governmental entity that imposes regulations for safety and security including conducting and maintaining log of quarterly emergency drills, including AED practice drills and staff's competency to respond in the absence of an aquatics/ safety coordinator.
Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
4 year Bachelor's degree in health related field such as athletic training, exercise science, kinesiology, fitness, health or recreation
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
Certification or license as a personal trainer, athletic trainer, exercise specialist, fitness instructor, or conditioning specialist from a NCAA- accredited certification organization (NATA, ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA)
Secondary certification in a fitness specialty area preferred but not required
AED/ CPR certification
Must have professional liability coverage
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 1 year experience in supervisory role in the health or fitness industry preferred
3 years experience in personal training, athletic training, wellness coaching or fitness instruction, and/ or exercise prescription
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Strong knowledge of exercise and general wellness
Write, speak and understand the English language
Knowledge of disease processes and disabilities and the ability to modify exercise prescriptions to accommodate those individuals
Strong communication skills both verbal and non-verbal and written with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and education levels
Ability to learn and use fitness testing software, basic computer skills for generating reports, exercise prescriptions and programs
INTERPERSONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Very strong interpersonal skills with the innate ability to motivate others
Able to maintain an even keeled, positive attitude at all times
Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the department.
