The Flag Coach is responsible for developing, teaching, and supervising all aspects of the flag regimen within the school’s marching band. This includes choreography, training, rehearsals, and performances. The coach works closely with the band director and other staff to ensure a cohesive and effective visual performance that enhances the marching band’s musical presentation.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and teach flag choreography for field shows, parades, and other performances in a timely fashion.
Teach flag and dance techniques to students of varying skill levels.
Assist in auditioning and selecting team members.
Plan and run regular rehearsals during band camp and throughout the season.
Coordinate with the band director and drill writer to ensure visual elements are integrated with musical performance.
Supervise students during rehearsals, performances, and travel.
Encourage team spirit, discipline, and commitment among students.
Maintain and inventory equipment (flags, poles, uniforms, etc.).
Attend all scheduled practices, competitions, and events.
Ensure a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all team members.
Qualifications:
Previous experience in flag performance, competition and/or instruction (high school, college, or independent teams).
Strong choreography and teaching skills.
Ability to lead and motivate students.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Knowledge of safety practices related to movement and equipment use.
Availability for rehearsals, band camp, parades and weekend competitions.
Preferred:
Experience with show planning.
First aid/CPR certification.
Experience working with high school students in an educational or extracurricular setting.
Working Conditions:
Outdoor and indoor practices and performances.
Evening and weekend hours required.
Physically active role; ability to demonstrate movements and carry equipment.

provisions of the Sussex County School Board’s policy manual.
