POSITION OVERVIEW
Performs intermediate skilled trades work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive, construction, and specialized light-to-heavy equipment. Work performed involves diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of vehicles and equipment, including those used in public transportation, emergency services, and construction. Mechanics may work on light and heavy-duty vehicles, buses, trucks, police equipment, and specialized equipment like sewer and water vehicles. Work is performed under minimal supervision.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Level I - Grade 8 - High School or General Equivalency Degree
Minimum of three (3) years of experience of maintenance and repair on various automotive light-to-heavy equipment; understanding of operation and maintenance requirements of commercial trucks.
Level II - Grade 9 - High School or General Equivalency Degree
Minimum of six (6) years of experience of maintenance and repair on various automotive light-to-heavy equipment; understanding of operation and maintenance requirements of commercial trucks.
Level III - Grade 10 - High School or General Equivalency Degree
Minimum of nine (9) years of experience of maintenance and repair on various automotive light-to-heavy equipment; understanding of operation and maintenance requirements of commercial trucks. May serve as a Team Lead at the discretion of the Chief Mechanic; must have minimum of two (2) years of prior supervisory experience to be considered for Team Lead.
There can only be one team lead as designated by the Chief Mechanic.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES
All Levels
Valid Virginia (VA) Driver's License - Must have upon hire. If relocating to VA, a valid VA drivers’ license is required to be obtained within 1 year from date of hire.
VDOT Flagger Certification - Must obtain and maintain within 1 year from date of hire
Basic Work Zone Certification - Must obtain and maintain within 1 year from date of hire. May also have VDOT certifications that are equivalent to Basic Work Zone.
CJIS/VCIN Access, as applicable - If assisting with Town facility maintenance, must obtain and maintain VCIN contractor level clearance. Will also be subject to fingerprinting and additional background check.
Level I
Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within 1 year from date of hire.
OSHA 10 - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within 3 months from date of hire
EPA Section 609 Certification - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within 3 months from date of hire
Level II
Class A CDL - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within 1 year from date of hire
OSHA 40 - Must have certificate of completion or must complete training within 1 year from date of hire
VDOT Intermediate Work Zone - Must have certificate of completion or must complete training within 6 months from date of hire
Virginia State Police Motor Vehicle Class A Inspectors License - Must have certificate of completion or must complete training within 6 months from date of hire
EPA UST Operator License Class B - Must have certificate of completion or must complete training within 6 months from date of hire
Level III
Industry Certifications in Fleet Management from a Nationally Recognized Institution or Association (NAFA, ASE, APWA) - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within the timeframe required by supervisor.
Leadership Training - Must have Leadership /Team Building Training certificate from VRSA or other reputable vendor as approved by Human Capital. Must have or maintain and obtain within 6 months from the date began serving as a team lead.

Basic to Advanced Knowledge of fleet maintenance procedures and standards, to include safety operations.
Ability to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, members of the general public, employees, Town Officials, and others involved in the performance of job duties; ability to assemble reports in a concise, clear and effective manner.
Proficient in automotive, heavy truck, & equipment repair and maintenance techniques.
Ability to operate a computer, and other facility equipment needed to perform job duties, proficiency in various software, including Microsoft Office suite; and excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to use independent judgment and work with little direct supervision.
