Flex Success Coach

This position is responsible for providing appropriate guidance and support to incoming first-year students and families as it relates to the Office of Student Success and the services the office provides to students— academic and transitional support to first-year students applicable to all aspects of the student's life tasks: academic, personal, social, and career. The Flex Success Coach is responsible for communicating with incoming first-year students and families via phone, email, and in-person throughout the admissions process, including Orientation Weekends and campus visit events. The person selected for this position will address the unique needs of first-year students by providing information regarding the holistic/pro-active opportunities, academic support/advising, and transition support the Office of Student Success provides. The Flex Coach will also assist in the implementation of programs and services designed to promote academic, personal, and social/emotional success, engagement, and retention of first-year students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

• Bachelor's degree preferred in an appropriate, related field (Education, Counseling, Student Personnel, or others) with 2 or more years of experience in college admissions, advising and/or in higher education;

Experience and Training:

• 2 or more years of experience in the field of college admissions and/or academic advising; prefer experience in working in higher education settings.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office and a student record system; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to analyze and synthesize situations and data, to implement appropriate solutions, and to create reports; ability to multitask, problem-solve, and work in a fast-paced environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

December through July:

• Develop rapport with incoming students, parents, and stakeholders on campus in order to assist with the matriculation of students to HPU.
• Provide accurate information regarding the functionality of the Office of Student Success during the admissions process for accepted students from December through August.
• Assists with the orientation preparation process for incoming students, including phone calls, emails, and in-person meetings with accepted students and parents.
• Assists with the development and dissemination of communication materials (brochures, website, and social media) to enhance the services provided for first-year students including materials for various stakeholders (including faculty and parents);
• Maintains confidential records, collects data, and prepares reports related to the functions of advising, planning, evaluation, and assessment;
• Makes referrals to other University services/offices as appropriate (examples: Academic Development, Registrar's Office, Student/Residence Life, Counseling & Psychological Services, Career Services, etc.);
• Attends Professional Development Training aligned to the goals of the position;
• Other duties as identified by the Assistant Vice President for Student Success.
• February through December:
• Works together with Department Administrator to provide support for
• Freshman Orientation events including corresponding with
• stakeholders regarding the events, working with Admissions for room
• assignments, maintaining the data related to events (Excel sheet of
• students aligned to major and maintaining changes).
• Works in conjunction with Admissions and other Success Coaches to process Course Proposals and build Cohort Spreadsheets for incoming students which includes data used to promote retention;
• Assists with first-year student activities that promote a sense of "belongingness" and "connection" with peers, High Point University, and the community;
• Supports the academic success and progress of first-year students by collaborating with Success Coaches to monitor class attendance, academic performance and planning, and transitional conferencing.
• Provides student support through developmental advising that comprehensively supports the whole student in all aspects of their life tasks - academic, personal, social, and career;
• Advises first-year students regarding academic requirements, academic policies and procedures when primary Success Coach is not on campus
• Maintains confidential records, collects data, and prepares reports related to the functions of advising, planning, evaluation, and assessment;
• Makes referrals to other University services/offices as appropriate (examples: Academic Services, Registrar's Office, Student/Residence Life, Counseling & Psychological Services, Career Services, etc.);
• Attends Professional Development Training aligned to the goals of the position;
• Other duties as identified by the Assistant Vice President for Student Success.
   

ACCOUNTABILITY:

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

• Supervision is received from the Assistant Vice President for Student Success.
   
• This is a full-time position that requires evening and weekend obligations. The ideal candidate will have excellent customer service skills and the ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Candidates should also have general knowledge about best practices in college transition/retention, late adolescent development - including social and emotional development, as well as experience working with this age group. The ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced work environment is a necessity of the position. Excellent oral and communication skills are required. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in an appropriate field - including higher education, developmental psychology, counseling, or education.
