SUMMARY - Provides an overview of purpose and expectations of the position
This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of safety operations across the company. This role requires an experienced safety professional that possesses a deep understanding of safety regulations to the transportation and trucking industry with the ability to develop and lead a high-performing team to maintain safety excellence, reduce accidents and incidents, and ensure compliance with FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) and DOT regulations.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions - Basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform; the reason the position exists is to perform these functions.
Primary - This section should include responsibilities and essential functions that are highest priority and/or account for 40-90% of time spent each year in execution.
  • Manage the organization's Safety Manual and all related processes, including developing and implementing new company approved safety policies and procedures.
  • Establish KPIs for each role within the Safety Hallway in coordination with direct reports.
  • Monitor FMCSA CSA scores, challenge DataQ process.
  • Conduct DOT compliance audits
  • Review significant customer contracts to ensure that the company can meet safety standards.
  • Proactively identify trends, areas of improvement, and root causes of accidents and incidents.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents.
  • Identify, develop and recommend improvement strategies utilizing data analytics and develop implementation protocols where appropriate.
  • Develop and implement strategies to reduce accidents and incidents.
  • Develop corrective actions based on accident reports.
  • Coordinate with insurance and legal departments on claims and litigation
  • Stay current with FMCSA and DOT regulations and ensure company-wide compliance.
  • Identify potential hazards along driving routes.

Secondary - This section should include responsibilities and essential functions that are moderate priority and/or account for 20%-40% of time spent each year in execution.
  • Manage the DOT accident registers information.
  • Review driver logs and ensure proper record upkeep.
  • Analyze safety-related data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Prepare and present Safety Reports on safety performance to management team.
  • Collaborate with other team managers to strengthen awareness of safety trends and opportunities through relevant and timely information sharing.
  • Develop training curriculums and ensure required training is administered and documented.
  • Provide safety training to driver, safety staff and all company members.

Tertiary - This section should include those responsibilities and essential functions that are lowest priority and/or account for 5%-20% of time spent each year in execution.
  • Conduct periodic inspections on company vehicles and equipment
  • Conduct maintenance vendor audits to determine maintenance compliance with regulations
  • Institute self-inspection protocols

Education/Experience
  • Required: HD Diploma/G.E.D.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience:7-10 years experience on Safety in trucking/transportation industry, FMCSA, DOT
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES
  • In-depth knowledge of Commercial driver’s license (CDL)
  • In-depth knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations
  • Strong communication and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including safety software and Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting
  • Ability to manage people and processes effectively
