Job Description - Food Service Employee

Job Summary: 


 


Bay Mills Community College provides free lunches to enrolled students, and reduced cost lunches to employees. The meal service is provided from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily, Monday through Thursday, each week of the academic semester.  The Food Service Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of providing student and employee meals.  The position is part time (up to 24 hours per week) and is dependent on continued funding. 



Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 



  • Performs meal planning duties and coordinates purchasing of food products and supplies.

  • Performs meal preparation, cooking, and serving meals to students and employees of BMCC.

  • Responsible for organizing, cleaning and sanitizing work areas before, during, and after the meal service, including cleaning of utensils, dishes, and equipment.

  • Responsible for serving meals in a fast, efficient, and friendly manner, while ensuring meals are distributed to students and employees only through the use of an ID scanning system.

  • Responsible for assisting food preparation activities for special events including feasts, meetings, commencement ceremonies, and other events.

  • Responsible for complying with relevant safety, hygiene, and service standards and procedures.

  • Must complete BMCC training programs as assigned.

  • Other duties may be assigned within the scope and complexity of the position description.


 


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Knowledge of food service and food preparation standards and techniques.

  • Knowledge of hygiene and sanitization standards.

  • Respect for the confidentiality of all information received.

  • Demonstrated personal integrity, sound judgment, and dependability.

  • Professional demeanor while representing BMCC.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and a commitment to the tribal college mission and purpose teaching and learning, high academic standards, and student success. 


 


Education and Experience:



  • Experience in the food service industry required, with food service management experience preferred.

  • Experience working in Tribal communities is preferred, specifically at a tribal college.

  • Excellent written communication and organization skills.

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with others, college and departmental committee experience preferred.

  • Knowledge or experience working with people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs.

  • Knowledge or experience in working with Native Americans, in an educational setting preferred.


 


Physical Requirements:



  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, with occasional walking, and minimal sitting.

  • Frequently the employee must bend, reach above shoulder level, kneel, and push/pull.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • The employee must use hands for repetitive action such as simple and/or firm grasping.

  • Duties are generally performed inside but are exposed to typical hazards in a kitchen environment including hot surfaces, sharp knives, kitchen equipment, hot water, and other potential hazards.
