Job Description - Foreperson

Job Responsibilities


Under the direction of a district superintendent, exercises first line supervision over highway maintenance crews in a maintenance district, assigning work, supplies, and materials on a daily basis.


 



  • Travel throughout district to oversee, advise and assist work crews, and observe traveled roadways to determine necessary maintenance.

  • Meet with citizens and investigate citizen inquiries.

  • Attend meetings with local officials and utility company representatives as required.

  • Monitor contractor activity.

  • Participate in employee relations issues, e.g. grievances, etc.; assist with performance appraisals, provide employee coaching when appropriate.

  • Shall periodically participate in new hire interviews and assist in selection of new employees.

  • Position requires a high response to expected overtime.

  • Will periodically assume additional duties in the event the Superintendent is absent.

  • Must perform duties in a professional and courteous manner to promote a positive image of the RCOC.

  • Regular and predictable onsite job attendance is an essential function of this position.

  • Requires a daily schedule that supports RCOC hours of operation.



Special Experience/Education




  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Ability to prepare reports, perform calculations, keep records, and deal effectively with other people, often times requiring use of current information processing systems, software and electronic communication is required.

  • Three (3) years minimum of progressively more responsible experience in highway maintenance or related field, including:

    • Ability to make decisions based on specific instructions or existing policies and procedures; ability to do considerable planning and analysis to ensure that district activities are performed according to established procedures or standards.

    • Ability to handle frequent internal contacts with employees and regular contact with external persons, requiring professional and good communication skills.

    • Ability to tolerate frequent exposure to unpleasant and/or hazardous working conditions. Knowledge of winter maintenance, pothole patching, asphalt & concrete repair, ditching, drainage, equipment operation (e.g. grader, shovel), etc. is highly preferred.



  • Possess and maintain a Michigan CDL-A driver’s license.
