Job Description - Forester/Arborist

CDR Emergency Management Inc. is seeking a qualified Forester/Arborist to support post-hurricane recovery operations in Transylvania county. This position requires an ISA Certification (or equivalent) and TRAQ qualification. In this role, you will evaluate hurricane-damaged trees on private property, document event-related damage, and determine whether compromised trees may die within five years and pose a hazard.

Essential Functions

  • Assess trees within the impacted areas to determine whether they may be a threat to public health and safety (i.e. hazard trees).
  • Maintain records of work performed.
  • Assist in maintaining tree inventory records.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Arboriculture, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Horticulture, or a related field (preferred).
  • Equivalent combination of education, ISA certification, and relevant field experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Certifications & Licenses

  • ISA Certified Arborist credential (required).
  • ISA TRAG (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification) required.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Experience

  • Minimum 2-3 years of professional experience in forestry, arboriculture, or tree health/risk assessment.
  • Prior experience assessing storm, or hurricane-damaged trees preferred.
  • Experience working on FEMA, state emergency management, or disaster recovery projects a plus.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of tree biology, health assessment, and risk evaluation methods.
  • Ability to identity hurricane-related tree damage and determine long-term hazard potential (up to 5 years).
  • Proficiency in documenting assessments with written reports, photos, and GPS/GIS tools.
  • Familiarity with FEMA Public Assistance programs, hazard tree eligibility, and environmental compliance (preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills for coordination with property owners, contractors, and government agencies.
  • Ability to work independently in the field, manage multiple assignments, and adapt to changing operational needs.
  • Commitment to professionalism, integrity, and ethical decision-making.
