Forge Lighting Designer's Job Description:



Forge Fine Arts Purpose Statement:


To bring glory to God through expression in the fine arts.  As students worship God through the arts, they will discover that He is the ultimate source of creativity in every art form. Our department strives to grow students beyond artistic techniques and talents to see them flourish in expression, communication, and servanthood.


 


Forge Lighting Designer's Responsibilities:  $30/hour  ~ 60 hours


 


Hourly Breakdown



  • Pre-Tech (30)

    • Design 

    • Equipment Renting/Hanging

    • Programming



  • Saturday-Wednesday (Tech Week) (25)

  • SHOWS** TBD, a student may be able to run this after all programmed

  • STRIKE (plan for 5 hours, could be less)

  • Creativity: To craft visually engaging scenes that align with the director’s vision.

  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with lighting fixtures, consoles, and effects.

  • Attention to Detail: Precision in programming and cue timing.

  • Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with the creative and technical teams.

  • Problem-Solving: Quick thinking to address challenges during rehearsals and performances.


Pre-Production Responsibilities



  1. Script and Score Analysis (2 hours)

    • Read the script and score to understand the mood, themes, and pacing of the production.

    • Identify scenes, moments, and transitions requiring specific lighting effects.



  2. Collaborating with the Creative Team to Design

    • Work closely with the director, set designer, and costume designer to ensure the lighting complements the overall vision.

    • Discuss mood, color palettes, and specific visual requirements for scenes.

    • Develop a lighting concept that supports the narrative and aesthetic.

    • Create a rough lighting plot to determine the placement and type of fixtures needed.



  3. Equipment and Budget Planning

    • Assess the available lighting inventory and budget.

    • Request additional equipment, gels, gobos, or special effects if needed.




During Rehearsals



  1. Plotting and Programming

    • Finalize the lighting plot and hang and focus lights accordingly.

    • Program lighting cues into the lighting console based on the script and director’s notes.



  2. Tech Rehearsals

    • Attend technical rehearsals to test cues and adjust timing, intensity, and transitions.

    • Work with the student light technician or stage manager to ensure cues are properly called and executed.



  3. Problem-Solving

    • Address any issues, such as malfunctioning fixtures, shadows, or conflicts with other technical elements.




*During Performances* (These responsibilities could fall to a student if there’s student interest/aptitude)



  1. Cue Execution

    • Operate the lighting board or supervise a student/operator to ensure cues are executed on time.



  2. Real-Time Adjustments

    • Monitor the performance for any unforeseen issues and make minor adjustments as necessary.



  3. Supporting Focus and Mood

    • Ensure lighting consistently enhances the performers and scenes, keeping focus on the appropriate areas of the stage.




Post-Show Responsibilities



  1. Strike and Inventory

    • Oversee the strike of lighting equipment, ensuring it is safely removed, stored, and accounted for.



  2. Documentation and Archiving

    • Save the lighting plot, cue sheet, and programming files for future reference.



  3. Feedback and Reflection

    • Participate in a post-show debrief to discuss what worked and what could improve.

Position Requirements:



  • Passionate relationship with Jesus Christ

  • Excellent decision-making skills

  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations

  • Knowledge of and/or prior experience with Fine Arts Music within High Schools

  • Clear on structure, mission, vision, and goals

  • 1-3 Years of Fine Arts Lighting experience

  • Proficient in various computer software including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Workspace, etc.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive student information

  • The attitude to go above and beyond, to provide service and excellence in each area of admissions at Forge

  • Excellent verbal and written communication

  • Highly organized and attention to detail

  • Ability to multi-task and make decisions regarding medical plans

  • Communicate and demonstrate an attitude that is Friendly, Fast, Fluid, and Flexible.
