Garden Center Department Assistant - Trees & Shrubs

We are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Trees & Shrubs Department Assistant for our retail garden center. Our vibrant team of botanical aficionados is dedicated to helping customers cultivate their own dream garden oasis by teaching, advising, and inspiring. Use your blooming enthusiasm for all things green, comprehensive knowledge of trees and shrubs, and retail forte to assist the Department Lead with merchandising, inventory management, general plant and product care, and customer service.

This is a full-time year-round position with pay starting at $19/hour, based on experience. Our Garden Center is open 7 days a week. Work weeks average 40 hours over 5 days, with one required weekend day and split days off. Some schedule fluctuation through different seasons is expected.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Engage with customers directly to assist with plant and product selection, offering expert advice and knowledge
• Strong focus on sales - be readily available, outgoing, and enthusiastic about customer service and making sales
• Create a welcoming and informative environment to enhance the customer experience and make people want to come back again and again
• Provide backup support for cashiering, answering phones, and other duties as needed
• Help receive and unload new inventory from trucks, assess product quality, and tag plants and products
• Manage product placement and signage under the Lead’s direction to create attractive displays and maximize sales potential
• Maintain plant quality through routine maintenance and care
• Assist Lead with weekly inventory counts of department’s plant and products
• Oversee department cleanliness and organization, ensuring products are well-displayed and easily accessible

REQUIREMENTS:

• Very strong knowledge of plants/products in trees and shrubs department, including care and maintenance
• High level of technical understanding related to horticulture and retail garden center operations
• Passion for customer service, retail, and driving sales
• Background in retail, specifically garden centers, strongly preferred
• Exceptional customer service skills with the ability to communicate calmly, clearly, and professionally (both verbally and in writing) with customers and staff
• Teamwork mindset and willingness to be flexible and jump in where needed to assist
• Keen eye for detail, motivation to meet and exceed goals, interest in the numbers (sales goals, margins, budgets)
• Proficiency in POS systems and Google suite
• Ability to safely lift 50+ pounds and perform physical tasks, including prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, and walking on gravel and slopping ground
• Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
