About the Role

The General Labor Worker is responsible for providing essential labor support to the Physical Plant Department by assisting skilled trades personnel with maintenance, construction, grounds, renovation, moving, and campus improvement projects. This position performs a variety of manual labor tasks that contribute to the safe, efficient, and professional operation of AIDB's educational, residential, administrative, and support facilities.

The General Labor Worker supports carpenters, maintenance mechanics, electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, painters, grounds personnel, and other maintenance staff while helping maintain the appearance, safety, and functionality of AIDB campuses. This position requires flexibility, teamwork, physical stamina, and the ability to perform a wide variety of duties in both indoor and outdoor environments.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Basic Qualifications

• Education & Experience: High school diploma or GED; OR a minimum of three (3) years of experience in landscaping, construction, building maintenance, or a closely related field. 
• Licensure & Insurance: Valid Driver License with the ability to qualify for coverage under the AIDB vehicle insurance program. Driving accommodations may be made for applicants with an exceptionality.
• Must meet suitability requirements for employment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Facilities Maintenance: Experience in commercial facilities maintenance. 
• Grounds & Landscaping: Experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance and operating commercial grounds equipment. 
• Trades Support: Experience supporting skilled construction trades. 
• Machinery Operation: Forklift or equipment operation experience preferred, but not required. 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

General Maintenance & Trades Support

• Skilled Trades Assistance: Assist carpenters, maintenance mechanics, electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, painters, and other skilled trades personnel with assigned maintenance and construction projects. 
• Site Preparation: Prepare job sites by moving equipment, assembling materials, cleaning work areas, and providing general labor support. 
• Material Transport: Load, unload, transport, and organize tools, equipment, furniture, and construction materials. 
• Minor Repairs: Assist with minor building repairs and maintenance activities as assigned. 
• Equipment & Tools: Ability to safely operate grounds maintenance equipment and hand tools. 
• Instructions & Communication: Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. 
• Technical Knowledge: Basic knowledge of construction, maintenance, landscaping, and grounds maintenance practices.  
• Interpersonal & Teamwork: Ability to work independently and as part of a team, maintain strong work ethic, dependable attendance, and communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and campus personnel.

Moving, Event Support & Cleaning

• Furniture Moving & Relocations: Move office furniture, classroom furniture, appliances, equipment, and supplies throughout campus; assist departments with office relocations and facility reconfigurations. 
• Event Logistics: Set up and remove tables, chairs, stages, tents, podiums, audiovisual equipment, and materials for meetings, conferences, graduations, athletic events, and special campus functions. 
• Facility Deep Cleaning: Perform pressure washing of sidewalks, buildings, entrances, and parking areas; clean gutters, downspouts, roofs, and drains. 
• Hard Surface Care: Deep clean flooring (tile, concrete, hard surfaces) using specialized cleaning equipment; remove debris, trash, construction waste, and recyclable materials. 
   

Grounds Maintenance & Demolition

• Landscape Upkeep: Assist with mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, weed control, leaf removal, and planting trees, shrubs, flowers, and seasonal materials. 
• Material Application: Spread mulch, gravel, soil, fertilizer; assist with irrigation repairs, grounds beautification, and removing fallen limbs/storm debris. 
• Demolition Support: Perform hand demolition of walls, flooring, cabinetry, ceilings, fixtures, and building materials during renovation projects. 
• Site Labor: Remove construction debris, prepare work areas for rebuilding, dig trenches/holes/foundations using hand tools, and assist with concrete preparation. 

Equipment Operation & Customer Service

• Equipment Care & Operation: Safely operate lawn mowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, pressure washers, shovels, picks, rakes, brooms, wheelbarrows, and other hand/powered tools. 
• Tool Maintenance: Perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance of assigned tools and equipment, reporting malfunctions or safety concerns promptly. 
• Customer Relations: Interact professionally with students, employees, visitors, and contractors; respond promptly and courteously to work requests while maintaining a positive service-oriented attitude. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The General Labor Worker position requires the ability to perform physically demanding work, including:

• Frequently lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials weighing up to 50 pounds. 
• Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, stooping, climbing, and reaching throughout the workday. 
• Performing repetitive physical labor indoors and outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions. 
• Operating manual and powered tools safely, working from ladders and elevated surfaces when necessary. 
• Tolerating exposure to dust, dirt, noise, construction materials, cleaning chemicals, and varying temperatures.

Professional Development and Certifications

• Sign Language Requirement: Employees are expected to develop effective communication skills with individuals served by obtaining a minimum SURVIVAL level of sign language proficiency according to the AIDB evaluation system within thirty-six (36) months of employment. 
• Emergency Response & Safety: Assist during campus emergencies, severe weather events, and disaster recovery; participate in preventive maintenance, safety meetings, and departmental training.

SALARY:       $15.25 - $17.89 per hour Scale C5 Rank 31
