Job Description - General Manager (GM)








Job Summary:







Our client, a leading clearing and forwarding company with over 30 years of industry experience, is seeking a seasoned General Manager to oversee and drive the company’s strategic, operational, and financial performance. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership, deep knowledge of logistics and customs processes, and a proven ability to optimize operations, ensure compliance, and foster client relationships in a fast-paced, service-driven environment.











Responsibilities:







  • Oversee both import and export shipments, including real-time troubleshooting and implementing proactive, innovative solutions to prevent delays or issues with client cargo.

  • Drive business development and expansion by building and maintaining strong relationships with potential, new, and existing clients to meet revenue targets.

  • Ensure compliance with all statutory reporting requirements in Tanzania by overseeing the preparation and timely submission of relevant documentation, including withholding tax, PAYE, SDL, NSSF, WCF, provisional tax, and monthly VAT returns.

  • Facilitate daily internal communication and coordination to uphold the company’s reputation as a reliable paymaster, while also managing third-party follow-ups on outstanding payments (debtors).

  • Enforce company job requirements and conduct quarterly performance reviews for all team members.

  • Manage the company inbox in real time, including filtering, prioritizing, and responding to emails as needed.

  • Oversee staff payroll and general HR functions, including negotiation of employee salary and benefit packages.

  • Maintain continuous communication with company owners regarding incoming or unresolved matters, presenting solutions and updates as necessary.

  • Engage in high-level communication and issue resolution via phone, WhatsApp, and email with key external stakeholders, including service providers, suppliers, buyers, and other partners.

  • Coordinate tasks internally across different departments and time zones (primarily Middle East and Africa), using the company’s task management software.







Requirements



  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Finance, or a related science discipline.

  • A minimum of 5 years of proven experience at a senior managerial level within the logistics, clearing & forwarding, or trucking industry.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and manage diverse teams with a collaborative and people-focused approach.

  • High level of integrity, accountability, and reliability; able to operate independently with minimal supervision, including in the absence of the Owner.

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and strategic planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to engage effectively with clients, partners, staff, and government authorities.

  • Approachable, polite, and professional demeanor, especially in high-pressure situations, maintaining strong internal team morale and customer relationships.

  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to identify growth opportunities, streamline operations, and enhance profitability.

  • Solid understanding of Tanzanian statutory compliance and tax obligations, including PAYE, SDL, NSSF, WCF, VAT, and withholding tax.

  • Proficiency in using business software including Microsoft Office Suite, email platforms, and task management tools (e.g., Asana, Trello).

  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with a proactive and solutions-oriented approach to problem-solving.

  • Experience in managing budgets, financial reporting, and cost control measures.

  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including across time zones, and remain accessible for urgent business matters.

  • Experience in negotiating staff contracts, handling HR matters, and conducting performance evaluations.

  • Familiarity with international trade processes, documentation, and customs regulations.

  • Ability to manage real-time communications across multiple channels such as email, phone, and WhatsApp, and coordinate effectively across internal and external stakeholders.
