Job Summary

We are looking for a Geotechnical Seismic Hazard Engineer to assess risks and support safe, resilient infrastructure and project planning. In this role, you will analyze seismic hazard data, develop probabilistic and deterministic hazard models, and translate complex seismic assessments into practical recommendations for engineering and planning teams. Ideal candidates have strong analytical skills, experience with seismic hazard software and geotechnical data, and the ability to communicate technical findings clearly to both technical and non technical audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Perform geotechnical seismic hazards analyses, site-response, and ground-motion development for projects.
  • Support the development of site-specific probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) models including but not limited to:

            - Collect and analyze regional historical seismicity data,

            - Research regional tectonics, including fault structures and rupture mechanisms,

            - Develop magnitude-frequency relationships for seismic source zones and faults,

            - Develop smooth and background seismicity models, and

            - Evaluate ground motion models for applicability.

  • Perform probabilistic seismic hazard analyses using open-source, commercial, or in-house software as applicable.
  • Selection, scaling, spectral matching, baseline correction, and manipulation of ground motion time histories
  • Perform geotechnical engineering analyses, studies, and calculations. 
  • Prepare and write engineering and other reports. 
  • Review technical reports and engineering calculations prepared by entry-level engineers. 
  • Support business development and marketing activities, including preparation of cost proposals and presentations to existing and prospective clients. 
  • Perform field explorations, collection of samples, geologic reconnaissance, and mapping. 
  • Perform construction observation on job sites and prepare summary logs and other documentation. 
  • Follow Shannon & Wilson’s Quality Assurance policy. 
  • Follow and promote Shannon and Wilson’s Health and Safety and Loss Prevention policies. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor. 

Requirements

  • MS or PhD Degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Seismology, with research relevant to probabilistic seismic hazard analyses, ground motion time histories, or site response analyses. 
  • 7 to 14 years of experience as a Geotechnical Engineer with experience performing PSHAs and/or site response analyses. 
  • Knowledge and experience in probability and statistical methods.
  • Knowledge of ground motion and site response aspects included in building and bridge standards including AASHTO, ASCE 7, ASCE 61, ASCE 41, and CSA S6
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License in the state office is located. 
  • Supervisory experience leading, mentoring teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple clients, contracts, and projects at the same time. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact and communicate with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels. 
  • Personable, flexible, and professional demeanor.  
  • Critical thinking and analysis.  
  • The ability to work independently with the appropriate level of OR minimal supervision.  
  • The willingness and ability to travel to support the needs of other Shannon & Wilson offices.   
  • A valid driver license and insurable driving record.  
  • Basic computer skills: MS Office (required).  
  • Experience with Python (required).
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying 30+ pounds.  
  • Working in all weather conditions, on uneven terrain.  
  • The ability to travel (drive or fly) to field sites per project needs and job sites locally and out of state.

Level Placement

Typically, depending on an applicant’s education, experience, other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, a Mid-Level Geotechnical Seismic Hazard Engineer typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Senior Professional I, II, or III level.

 

Compensation:

Senior Professional I: $110,000 - $125,000

Senior Professional II: $115,000 - $135,000

Senior Professional III: $130,000 - $145,000
