Job Description - Grant Accountant II/III

Senior Grant Accountant role with a mission-driven nonprofit based in the Kansas City metro, offering a chance to lead federal and state grant management with a focus on Head Start programs and meaningful community impact.

Why We Like This

    • Grant expertise: Manage a diverse portfolio of federal, state, and private grants with a focus on Head Start and emergency services funding.
    • Mission-driven impact: Work on programs that directly support Kansas City community initiatives like early childhood education and senior services.
    • Career growth: Opportunity to advance within a collaborative finance & accounting team which values strategic thinking and professional development.

Requirements

    • Federal Grant & Head Start Expertise: Seasoned in managing federal grants with a strong preference for Head Start experience to ensure seamless knowledge transfer alongside a retiring tenured accountant, maintaining continuity in this critical funding area.
    • Strong Accounting & Compliance Skills: Deep accounting fundamentals with solid GAAP and Uniform Guidance know-how, capable of handling grant compliance and reporting accurately—addressing past challenges where hires lacked this depth.
    • Collaborative, Mission-Driven Mindset: A team player who builds strong relationships with program managers and grantors, thinks strategically about the bigger picture, and is genuinely invested in the nonprofit’s mission and impact.

Responsibilities

    • Grant Accounting Management: Take full ownership of the grant lifecycle across federal, state, and private foundation sources—building out grant infrastructure, partnering with program teams on budgets and contracts, managing monthly requisitions, rev rec, journal entries, budget adjustments, and delivering financial reports.
    • Compliance & Monitoring: Ensure ironclad compliance with federal, state, and local grant regulations plus Uniform Guidance; oversee timely submission of all required reports and maintain strong relationships with grantor agencies.
    • Financial Reporting & Audit Support: Own preparation of detailed fiscal reports for both internal and external stakeholders; provide audit schedules, work papers, and variance analysis to support audits and reviews.
    • Policy & Best Practices Oversight: Continuously refine and update financial and grant policies, internal controls, and procedures; keep the organization aligned with GAAP, GASB, and evolving grant management standards.
    • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Grant Managers, Finance Director, Program Directors, and external partners to ensure financial management supports program objectives and organizational priorities.
