Description
Position Summary: Facilitate all operations in the grocery and produce department through the training and management of employees and maintenance of products. Ensure an outstanding customer service experience.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Customer Service:
Provide excellent customer service and establish a culture of excellent customer service amongst the staff.
Greet, assist, and prioritize customer needs at all times by adhering to customer experience standards.
Help further the customer experience by assisting customers, sharing knowledge, and ensuring that each person is given attention.
Continually strive to further knowledge about products and industry standards and practices and pass that information along to the customers and Grocery and Produce Department staff members.
Help create and implement strategies to continually make the customer experience better.
Work with other departments to meet customer needs.
Keep the department organized, shoppable, and attractive.
Maintain department safety and cleanliness – both sales and storage areas.
Management and Training:
Ensure thorough job training of new staff members, as well as ongoing training and development of current staff.
Maintain regular communication with staff. Keep staff informed of new products, policies, and procedures.
Direct staff on daily tasks and projects. Prioritize, delegate, and keep the team focused. Ensure that team members complete their duties to a high standard and are productive during their working hours.
Assist where needed, especially when short staffed.
Solve problems, answer questions, and resource staff with appropriate equipment, training, and supplies needed to complete their assignments.
Uphold and enforce company policies.
Create and foster a workplace environment that encourages staff members to want to stay and grow with the company.
In conjunction with the Store Manager, interview and hire new staff members.
Conduct performance evaluations for staff members in a timely manner.
Create the staffing schedule within given payroll budget, as directed by upper management.
Properly report and record disciplinary actions as needed within the guidelines outlined in the employee handbook.
Produce Management:
Place produce orders. Report mispicks or poor quality product to receive credit from vendor.
Maintain a high quality, attractive, vibrant, and creatively displayed produce set at all times.
Explore new and effective ways of merchandising produce items that highlight seasonal, local, and promotional items.
Ensure the set is watered on a timely basis and that the produce is properly prepped, trimmed, rotated, rebundled, and culled to maintain peak freshness of the product.
Maintain the overall cleanliness of the department, including regularly washing display materials, keeping the floors clear of liquids and trash, and keeping display fixtures in proper working order.
Maintain accurate invoicing and costing data on all orders in the point of sale system. Update and print tags.
Ensure thorough job training regarding procedures and practices of the produce department to new staff members, as well as ongoing training and development of existing staff.
Other Responsibilities:
Regularly attend and participate in manager meetings and store meetings, as well as plan and lead department meetings.
Perform MOD (Manager on Duty) shifts and responsibilities as assigned.
Stay up to date on industry trends by attending product shows, visiting other stores, and seeking out knowledge through trade publications and online resources.
Keep an accurate perpetual inventory on grocery and produce items.
Work with Marketing Manager to promote items.
Review financial reports of department performance and take corrective action as necessary.
Maintain regular communication with upper management.
Be adaptable and flexible, taking on various duties, as needed.
Perform other duties, as assigned.
Requirements
REQUIREMENTS:
3+ years’ related grocery and produce work experience.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
High school diploma or equivalent is required. College degree preferred.
Food safety awareness is required. Familiarity with health and safety guidelines desired.
Excellent customer service skills.
Basic math skills.
Availability to work varied hours/days, as business dictates. Evening and weekend shifts required.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be professional, organized, energetic, a team player, self-motivated, and able to motivate others.
Knowledge of MS Office applications preferred.
Communicate and interact effectively and appropriately with all customers, co-workers, and management.
Ability to trouble-shoot problems and present solutions for a variety of situations.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Attention to detail.
Good judgment; the ability to make sound decisions and to solve any challenges arising while performing the work of the Department.

Physical Summary: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to operate mechanical equipment, sit, talk, hear, grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach with hand/arms, occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, climb with occasional repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement. The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and may occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Hearing capacity required to maximize ability to understand all verbal communication and react accordingly.
