Position Summary:
The Grocery Night Crew Assistant Manager is responsible for overseeing the nightly operations of the grocery department. This includes receiving and organizing freight, supervising and training the night crew, maintaining accurate inventory, and ensuring the efficient stocking of shelves. The Assistant Manager ensures all tasks are completed accurately and efficiently to support an organized, well-stocked, and customer-ready store each day. Reports to the Grocery Manager.
Wage Range: $25.25 to 26.89
Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Hours: 9 pm to 5 am
Reports to: Grocery Manager
General Responsibilities:
Department Leadership & Team Support
Supervise and support the night crew team during overnight shifts.
Oversee training and development of new and current staff on stocking procedures, safety, and productivity expectations.
Lead by example to foster a motivated, efficient, and safety-conscious team environment.
Monitor staff performance, providing coaching and support to meet nightly operational goals.
Keep the Grocery Manager informed of challenges, needs, or improvement opportunities.
Operational Efficiency & Inventory Management
Coordinate unloading, receiving, and accurate check-in of nightly deliveries.
Organize pallets and product staging by aisle or product category for efficient stocking.
Direct and assist with stocking shelves and organizing back stock, ensuring proper rotation (FIFO) and food safety standards.
Conduct quality checks, promptly removing damaged or expired products.
Maintain clean, safe, and organized storage, staging, and sales areas throughout the shift.
Support shrink management through careful handling, storage, and ordering practices.
Report equipment maintenance needs and assist in tracking repairs.
Financial Management & Data Reporting
Support the Grocery Manager in tracking and meeting department budget goals.
Assist with maintaining accurate receiving logs and controlling shrink.
Support accurate inventory tracking to inform purchasing and restocking needs.
Vendor & Supplier Coordination
Assist in communicating with vendors regarding delivery timing, shortages, damages, and special orders.
Ensure vendor communications support accurate receiving and product availability.
Compliance & Safety
Ensure products are handled, stored, and stocked according to food safety standards and Co-op procedures.
Support night crew compliance with OSHA, health, and safety regulations.
Educate staff on food safety practices, safe equipment use, and emergency procedures.
Additional Responsibilities
Participate in department and storewide meetings, initiatives, and trainings as assigned.
Perform other duties as directed by the Grocery Manager or Store Management.
Requirements
Qualifications:
Minimum of 1 year of experience in grocery, warehouse, or freight environments; leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge of food safety standards and proper product handling procedures.
Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Experience with inventory systems and basic data entry (Microsoft Office, inventory software, etc.).
Ability to work overnight shifts, including weekends and holidays as needed.
Ability to work independently and take initiative to resolve issues during overnight hours.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, lift, bend, reach, and perform physical work for up to 8–10 hours per shift.
Ability to regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds, both individually and with assistance.
Ability to push and pull heavy carts and pallets.
Comfortable working in varying temperature environments, including refrigerated and freezer storage areas.
