Location: Spartanburg Medical Center (SMC), Spartanburg, SC Shift: 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM | 5 Days per Week Reports To: Pathologists’ Assistants
About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Gross Technician to join our team at Spartanburg Medical Center. Under the general direction of the CPG Medical Director, Pathologists’ Assistant Director (PA-D), and Pathologists’ Assistant Supervisor (PA-S), the Gross Technician will perform gross examinations and dissections of anatomic pathology surgical specimens in accordance with established guidelines.
This role is crucial in delivering timely and accurate pathology reports and will work closely with the Anatomic Pathology team, lab personnel, and medical staff.
Key Responsibilities
Perform gross description and complete dissection of assigned simple and routine surgical specimens.
Support frozen section services across three locations during your shift:
Spartanburg Medical Center (onsite)
SMC – Mary Black Campus (offsite)
Pelham Medical Center (offsite)
Capture and manage specimen photography and radiography.
Assist in specialized procedures and designated pathology projects.
Handle tissue procurement for special studies.
Conduct digital slide scanning for remote diagnostics and sharing.
Access electronic medical records to guide specimen handling.
Collaborate with SMC’s anatomic lab staff for quality, timely reporting.
Manage gross room supplies, equipment, and routine upkeep tasks.
Maintain cleanliness, organization, and a professional demeanor at all times.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Certification
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Biological Sciences or Medical Laboratory Technology
Licensing: No certifications or licenses required
Experience
Preferred: 1+ year in anatomic pathology specimen or clinical laboratory specimen processing in a fast-paced setting
Skills & Abilities
Strong verbal communication skills in gross pathology.
Excellent attention to detail for identifying subtle gross abnormalities.
Ability to use current computer software and laboratory information systems.
Commitment to adhering to all organizational policies and procedures.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Long periods of standing at workstations.
Frequent repetitive motions.
Moderate noise environment.
