Job Description - Hardware Technician

Join the team bringing advanced autonomy to the built world

At Bedrock, we’re moving AI out of the lab and into the real world. Our team is composed of industry veterans who helped launch Waymo, scaled Segment to a $3.2B acquisition, and grew Uber Freight to $5B in revenue. Today, we’re deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction machinery across the country, accelerating project schedules of billion-dollar infrastructure projects and improving safety on job sites. Backed by $350M in funding, we’re working quickly to close the gap between America's surging demand for housing, data centers, manufacturing hubs, and the construction industry's growing labor shortage.

This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. You’ll collaborate with construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations can’t touch. If you're ready to apply cutting-edge technology to solve meaningful problems alongside a talented team—we'd love to have you join us.

We're looking for a hands-on, detail-oriented Hardware Technician to join our Hardware Engineering team. You'll be at the core of how we build, test, and field our autonomous systems — from assembling hardware test benches in our San Francisco lab to deploying on active construction sites in Texas and California.

This role sits at the intersection of lab operations, hardware builds, field support, and engineering collaboration. You'll work directly alongside our electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers to bring prototype hardware to life, keep test infrastructure running, and ensure our equipment is always ready to perform. If you're the kind of person who'd rather be at a bench or on a job site than behind a desk — and you take pride in doing hands-on work at a high standard — this role is for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up, assemble, configure, and bring up Hardware test systems that support hardware and software validation across our autonomy programs.

  • Execute test plans alongside engineers, collect and log results, and document findings that drive hardware iteration and milestone sign-off.

  • Integrate new hardware components — sensors, compute, actuator interfaces — into existing lab and HIL environments as our platform evolves.

  • Fabricate, route, and assemble wire harnesses for prototype builds and system integration from engineering schematics and wiring diagrams.

  • Diagnose and resolve hardware issues at the component, subsystem, and system level using oscilloscopes, multimeters, bench power supplies, CAN analyzers, and other diagnostic tools.

  • Document failures with precision — failure modes, reproduction steps, supporting data — to give engineers what they need to drive root cause analysis quickly.

  • Assist with hardware retrofits and hardware updates on our fleet of autonomous machines as the system matures.

  • Keep our hardware lab organized, safe, and compliant — including tool calibration, equipment inspection schedules, ESD protocol adherence, and inventory management.

  • Ensure all lab equipment and test setups meet safety requirements; proactively identify and address workspace hazards before they become problems.

  • Work closely with electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers day-to-day to support prototype bring-up, hardware integration, and program milestone delivery.

  • Help build and improve SOPs, assembly instructions, and lab documentation as the team scales and processes mature.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience as a hardware technician, electronics technician, or similar role in an R&D, robotics, automotive, or aerospace environment.

  • Demonstrated experience building or working with Hardware test systems, electro-mechanical prototype assemblies, or test bench infrastructure.

  • knowledge in wire harness fabrication: crimping, connector assembly, and pinning.

  • Working knowledge of electrical diagnostic tools: oscilloscopes, multimeters, bench power supplies, and CAN/LIN bus analyzers.

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical assembly drawings.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, R&D startup environment where priorities evolve quickly.

  • Willingness to travel to active construction field sites (up to 20%) and work on hardware in outdoor environments.

  • Strong written and verbal communication — you can document clearly, flag issues precisely, and work well with engineers across disciplines.

Nice to Have:

  • Prior experience at an autonomous vehicle development, robotics, or ADAS company

  • Familiarity with sensor hardware: LiDAR, radar, cameras, IMUs, and their integration into compute or vehicle platforms.

  • Experience with automotive communication protocols: CAN, CAN FD, Ethernet, GMSL, LIN.

  • Working knowledge of Linux/shell environments for interfacing with embedded or compute hardware.

  • Comfort around heavy machinery or industrial equipment — construction site experience is a bonus.

  • Associate's degree or technical certification in Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or a related field — or equivalent experience through work or military service.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily onsite at our San Francisco HQ hardware lab, with possible travel to field sites in Texas, California, and other active project locations.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs; work involves standing, kneeling, and operating in tight equipment spaces.

  • Field work will take place on active construction sites — appropriate PPE and safety training required and provided.

  • Must be comfortable moving between a lab bench and an outdoor job site in stride.

Our roles are often flexible. If you don't fit all the criteria, or are in another location (especially one where we have an office like SF or NY) please apply anyway! We'd love to consider you.
