Objective / Purpose:
The Research Strategy and Operations function is responsible for integrating scientific acumen with business analytics and processes to deliver clear business plans, operational excellence and portfolio progression for the Takeda Research pipeline.
The Head of Research Program Management leads our program management competency, providing global leadership and management to cross-functional teams in order to drive drug discovery and achieve results for pipeline assets. This role requires strong expertise in discovery program management to lead team of experts to establish program strategies, goals, priorities, and long-term plans aligned with the portfolio strategy. Combines knowledge in program management, study operationalization, clinical development, finance etc. to manage Research programs from a performance and budget perspective. Actively leverages internal cross-functional colleagues to influence best practices across the organization to deliver on key milestones with quality and speed. Partners with Senior Research Leadership and scientific leads to drive on time and on budget delivery of program milestones and objectives.
Accountabilities:
Leads a team of Program Managers to operationalize the pipeline strategy, recruiting top talent to drive overall pipeline progression effectively.
Collaborates with Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) and Platform leadership to develop comprehensive end-to-end program plans, including defining objectives, milestones, and measurable deliverables.
Proactively assesses program readiness progression and drives & review with Senior Research Leadership and with senior governance bodies
Provides expert guidance on the drug discovery process and applies best practices in program management to advance all programs.
Communicates effectively with key stakeholders regarding the status, objectives, risks, and mitigation plans of Discovery programs to enhance the organization's focus and delivery capabilities.
Utilizes advanced systems and technologies to ensure rigor, consistency, and transparency in program reporting, facilitating informed decision-making.
Develops and implements real-time tracking for key program information, resources, and costs, aiding in prioritization and strategic growth planning.
Monitors and analyzes external market trends to deliver meaningful competitive intelligence that influences program prioritization.
Influences and ensures the timely delivery of strategic decisions, aligning with research priorities to support critical program outcomes.
Drives cross functional communication and collaboration to enhance program management capabilities across Takeda
Contributes significantly to corporate strategic planning, setting strategic priorities, allocating resources, and establishing metrics to measure progress.
Conducts high-level commercial assessments at project inception and continues through key milestones to align with business objectives.
Proactively identifies program risks and implements mitigation plans to prevent issues, ensuring timely communication with senior executive management.
Maintains regular communication with senior R&D leadership regarding the status, risks, and progress of pipeline assets.
Drives innovation in research methodologies and ensures the adoption of best practices in project management and execution.
Contributes to Takeda-wide Program Management initiatives, supporting the development and scaling of capabilities, tools, and processes.
Expected 15 years related experience in the pharmaceutical industry, with working knowledge of research and development and commercial operations.
Expected 10 years drug discovery experience in pharmaceutical/biotechnology with interdisciplinary global experience with complex projects including program leadership, strategy and execution and matrix team management.
Extensive experience in research program management with strong knowledge of end-to-end discovery process from pre-project start to IND
Excellent project management and organizational skills.
Ability to influence key program decisions with senior scientific leaders
Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to provide strategic direction and drive results.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
In-depth understanding of regulatory requirements and ethical standards in pharmaceutical research.
Advanced degree (Ph.D., M.S., or equivalent) in a scientific discipline preferred

For Location:
U.S. Base Salary Range:
$205,100.00 - $322,300.00
The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.The actual base salary offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.
U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/ or long-term incentives. U.S. based employees may be eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision insurance, a 401(k) plan and company match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, a tuition reimbursement program, paid volunteer time off, company holidays, and well-being benefits, among others. U.S. based employees are also eligible to receive, per calendar year, up to 80 hours of sick time, and new hires are eligible to accrue up to 120 hours of paid vacation.
