Job Description - Head of School

The Opportunity
The next Head of St. John's Episcopal School in Olney, MD (STJES) will have the opportunity to lead a PK3 - 8 coed school recognized for its excellence in preparing students for high school. STJES provides an environment of cross-curricular learning, with teachers who work collaboratively to inspire and challenge students in a safe and nurturing community. STJES graduates are accepted and are successful in top high schools across the region.
The Head of School will work with a talented and dedicated faculty to provide students with an education that is focused on academics, character, and faith. The HOS works collaboratively with the Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church (STJEC). The Head of School reports to the School's Board of Trustees which is responsible to the Vestry and the Rector. The HOS works collaboratively with the Church's Rector on spiritual development. As an Episcopal school, STJES welcomes students of all faiths and is known for its diverse student body.
The HOS is the outward face of the school, building relationships with parents, the St. John's Church community, and the broader independent school community.
For additional information, please see the attached school profile and visit the STJES web site.
Priorities
Priorities for the Head of School include:
Increasing enrollment.

Enrollment has increased recently, and STJES can accommodate additional students. The HOS will work with the admissions director and the Board to move STJES towards capacity.
Developing a culture of philanthropy.

The HOS must be able to connect with donors and potential donors and develop strong relationships.
Managing resources prudently.

Thanks to devoted and talented faculty, being a small school has not compromised opportunities for students. It does mean that resource allocations are made carefully and thoughtfully.
Nurturing the strong relationship that exists between the school and the church.

The HOS and the Rector have developed an excellent partnership, which strengthens the entire church / school community.
Qualifications
Requirements include a passion for the school's mission and experience necessary to lead an excellent school. We understand that each candidate will possess a unique set of skills and experience. The following list provides a profile of the type of candidates the search committee seeks.
Experience, preferably academic and administrative, in an independent school that includes primary and/or middle school grades.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Public speaking is a routine requirement of the position.
The ability to form strong relationships in an inclusive community.
Experience in supporting faculty, including curriculum development, faculty recruitment and retention.
A commitment to STJES's Episcopal identity. It is not required that the HOS be an Episcopalian. However, he or she must understand and actively support STJES's Episcopal identity.
A proven ability to listen, analyze information, and make good decisions.
Financial acumen to develop and manage the school's budget.
A minimum of five years in a leadership position.
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree; a Master's or Ph.D. is preferred.
Compensation will be based on experience. The minimum starting salary is $200,000.
Start Date
The previous HOS determined late in the school year that she would not return for personal reasons. We would like to welcome our next HOS as soon as possible, as early as the Fall of 2024 or January 2025. There is an Interim HOS in place, so we do have the flexibility to wait until July 2025, for the right candidate.
