Head Softball Coach

Ferrum College, an NCAA Division II institution and member Conference Carolinas, is looking for its next Head Softball Coach. This is a full-time, 12-month position. Review of applications will begin immediately. 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:  The Head Softball Coach will evaluate, recruit, coach and mentor qualified student-athletes that will compete at a high level in the classroom and build a championship culture on the field. The successful candidate will oversee the organization of all team practices, games and budgets. This individual will put together a comprehensive recruitment plan for the softball staff and will ensure a culture of compliance within all NCAA Division II, Conference Carolinas and Ferrum College rules and regulations, and ensure all coaches and student-athletes comply with the same. Finally, the successful candidate will serve in administrative capacity as needed and directed by the Director of Athletics.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  

1. Evaluate, recruit, coach and mentor qualified student-athletes and prepare the team for a full intercollegiate varsity softball experience.
2. Oversee all aspects of the softball program operations, including, but not limited to, the development and management of all team practices, contests, recruitment, academic monitoring, budgets and the supervision of all full-time, part-time, volunteer and student assistant coaching staff.
3. Develop and execute a comprehensive recruitment plan for the entire softball staff, ensuring a robust and competitive roster from the local, regional and national landscape.
4. Ensure a culture of compliance around all NCAA Division II and Ferrum College rules and regulations and ensure all coaching staff members and student-athletes do the same.
5. Travel locally, regionally and nationally for all regular-season and post-season events, conference and/or national meetings and fundraising, alumni and community events.
6. Develop yearly, non-conference, game schedules to ensure high-level competition in preparation for conference and NCAA/national competitions.
7. Oversee student-athlete academic progress, be available for consultation/support for student-athletes and direct student-athletes to the appropriate academic professionals to ensure academic success.
8. Select and purchase all equipment necessary to ensure a competitive softball program.
9. Work with athletics administration on the upkeep of the Van Kleeck Softball Complex and all other relevant facilities utilized by the softball team.
10. Work closely with the Sports Information Director to develop a media plan and be available for interviews and speaking engagements to internal and external constituents.
11. Serve in administrative capacity, as well as other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Oversight of full-time assistant coach and all volunteer and student assistant coaches.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:  

Education/Experiences: 

A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years coaching experience at the collegiate, club or high school level is required. A master’s degree and collegiate playing and coaching experience is preferred. 

Licenses:
Current and valid driver’s license required.

The candidate must be able to work independently and have the ability to work on evenings and weekends throughout the year to accomplish the tasks necessary for success in this field.  The successful candidate must be committed to working and teaching within an environment that embraces the development of students around their education, cultural diversity, mental health awareness and NCAA and Conference Carolinas compliance.
