INTRODUCTION:
To provide the Siletz Community Health Clinic with motivated, interested Siletz Tribal Members. To provide a Siletz Tribal Member an opportunity to experience the overall functions of a successful health clinic in a community servicing members and residents. The intent of the Health Service Protégé is to provide a program in which Siletz Tribal Member may apply, work in the health field and gain one-on-one experience to begin a career in the health field.
The Protégé will initially be required to work in the area of Medical Support to learn records management, patient scheduling, and customer service to gain a general knowledge of clinic services. In addition, the Protégé will select a minimum of 4 areas of interest to gain and develop an in-depth working knowledge of each particular clinical services curriculum. Each clinical service will have a curriculum that will include a pre and post assessment to ensure Protégé received comprehensive training and related work experience.
Listed below are 7 clinical service/areas of interest:
- Medical,
- Dental,
- Optometry,
- Community Services,
- Prevention Behavioral Services,
- Pharmaceutical,
- Healthy Traditions.
After completing the 2-year program and as part of the Health Services Protégé position, the Protégé will have an opportunity to work in one area of interest for an additional 6-months to gain additional experience and/or obtain certification, if applicable.
Upon successful completion of the Protégé limited duration position, the incumbent may be hired in a vacant and entry level position in one of the 7 clinical service areas without the formal recruitment process.
DUTIES:
- Medical Support –train as a Patient Care Coordinator and Records Clerk. Duties include, but are not limited to, answering multi-line telephone, scheduling appointments, registering patients, scanning documents, and assisting patients with questions and general needs.
- Medical –train as a Medical Assistant. Duties include, but are not limited to, cleaning exam rooms, rooming patients with chart vitals including weight, height, blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature; prepare patient for visit by obtaining reason for visit, patient history, medication reconciliation, and past medical and social history; assist provider with procedures, instrument sterilization, maintain diagnostic equipment, and perform diagnostic tests including EKG’s, tympanometry, blood glucose tests, HGB A1C, and basic laboratory tests.
- Dental – gain experience in dental office. Duties include, but are not limited to, cleaning exam rooms, assisting with sterilization, and scheduling dental appointments.
- Optometry –train as an Optometry Assistant. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting Optometrist with services, scheduling patient appointments, maintaining cleanliness and organization of optometry office, clean and sterilize implements and diagnostic equipment, prepare and replenish supplies, assist patients in selecting frames, and order eyeglasses and contacts prescribed by the Optometrist.
- Community Services – to gain experience in all aspects of Community Health including assisting with transportation scheduling, assisting Community Health Advocate in home visits, health promotion, and working with TPEP program with activities.
- Prevention Behavioral Services – to gain experience in all aspects of Prevention and Behavioral Health program activities. Activities may include rafting, hiking, ropes course, and/or facilitating community meetings. Activities require significant planning and organizing to ensure a positive experience for youth and other participants.
- Pharmaceutical –train as a pharmacy clerk and technician. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting with stocking and replenishing inventory, process recalled medication, process prior authorizations, process check requests, maintaining answering the phones and assisting patients with orders and questions, operate postage meter for daily mail, assist in dispensing of medications, and cleanliness in the pharmacy.
