Job Description - Healthy Living Educator (Sipayik)

Wabanaki Public Health & Wellness (WPHW) is growing, and we are excited to be adding new people to our team!  If you value inclusivity, balance, and cultural centeredness and have a true passion for serving others, you may be a great fit for our team!  WPHW is a non-profit organization that serves four federally recognized tribes located in five communities:  the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Aroostook Band of Mi'kmaq, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point, and the Penobscot Nation.  Wabanaki traditions, language, and culture guide our approach and describe the ways we live in harmony with each other and the land we collectively share.  Services are available to community members living on and off-reservation across the State of Maine.


Position Summary:



This position will promote wellness and healthy lifestyles by designing and implementing public health prevention programming related to commercial tobacco prevention, traditional tobacco education, and healthy eating and active living programs.



This is a Full-Time (32 hours per week) Position. 



Duties and Responsibilities:




    • Develop new and strengthen existing partnerships with community-based agencies to provide commercial tobacco prevention, traditional tobacco education, healthy eating and active living initiatives, including nutrition education programs.

    • Ability to implement Maine SNAP-Ed program deliverables in accordance with USDA SNAP-Ed, Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and University of New England (UNE requirements).

    • Partner with tribal schools, childcare centers, out-of-school programs, community centers, and other tribal organizations to implement healthy eating and active living programs, and commercial tobacco prevention programming and policies. Identify and conduct commercial tobacco prevention outreach and education to non-clinical settings.

    • Participate in the development and implementation of a youth commercial tobacco prevention program in schools.

    • Work with community partners to develop and/or implement strategies that aid in obesity prevention and nutrition education.

    • Gather data and develop health education initiatives aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles, wellness, and a healthy environment.

    • Participate in health fairs, coordinate health information projects such newsletters, informational displays, and community health events.

    • Design and distribute health education materials that are culturally appropriate.

    • Support social media promotion of programming.

    • Attend required trainings and meetings, both in person and online, in accordance with grant funding.

    • Complete reporting and evaluation as related to deliverables.

    • Perform other duties as assigned.



    Education and Experience Required:



    • Associates Degree in Public Health or a health related field AND 4 years of experience OR Bachelor’s degree in Public Health or a health related field.

    • Preference will be given for experience in implementing nutrition education, obesity prevention services, and commercial tobacco prevention and/or policies in school or community settings.

    • Experience using Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel.

    • Valid Maine driver’s license and reliable transportation required.

    • Experience working with Tribal communities. 



      Skills and Qualifications Required:



      • Excellent organizational and communication skills

      • The ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently.

      • A strong work ethic and enthusiasm.

      • Candidate must be willing to travel with some overnights for trainings and events.

      • A current driver’s license, a good driving record, and access to reliable transportation 
        are required.


      • Must pass criminal background check.
