Job Description - Heavy Equipment Mechanic


Job Title: Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Location: Etowah, Tennessee*
Hours: Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM
Compensation:  $17/hr+ based on prior experience


*Some travel will be required and will be company-paid and compensated accordingly

Company Overview: Haren Construction Company, Inc. specializes in water and wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, and commercial and industrial types of construction.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for performing inspections, maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a wide range of heavy construction equipment. This role ensures that equipment operates safely and efficiently to meet the demands of water and wastewater construction sites.
Preventive Maintenance & General Repairs
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on heavy equipment including excavators, bulldozers, cranes, concrete pumps, dewatering pumps, compactors, and specialized wastewater construction equipment.
  • Conduct oil and filter changes, fluid checks, lubrication, and cooling system maintenance in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Replace, adjust, or repair defective components such as hoses, belts, undercarriage components, and hydraulic cylinders.
  • Use service manuals and mechanical diagrams to troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
Diagnostics & Troubleshooting
  • Identify root causes of equipment malfunction through inspection and mechanical testing.
  • Utilize basic diagnostic tools to assess engine, transmission, and hydraulic system performance.
  • Recommend and implement corrective action to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Test equipment after repairs to ensure proper performance and operational safety.
Equipment Inspection & Condition Assessment
  • Conduct thorough inspections of heavy equipment, focusing on mechanical integrity, wear parts, and safety-critical systems.
  • Monitor component condition such as brakes, steering, track and tire wear, fluid leaks, and attachment performance.
  • Report findings and maintenance needs to supervisors and document all inspections and repairs accurately.
Parts Management & Documentation
  • Maintain proper inventory of tools, parts, and consumables required for maintenance and repairs.
  • Accurately complete work orders, maintenance logs, and equipment service records.
  • Coordinate with procurement or parts suppliers to order replacement parts in a timely manner.
Communication & Teamwork
  • Collaborate with project superintendents, field supervisors, and equipment operators to prioritize repairs and minimize equipment downtime.
  • Provide mechanical expertise and guidance to field teams regarding equipment use, limitations, and maintenance practices.
  • Communicate status updates, safety concerns, and repair timelines clearly and professionally.
Safety & Compliance
  • Work in accordance with company safety policies and OSHA regulations, including proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, and confined space awareness.
  • Handle fuels, oils, and hazardous materials in compliance with environmental regulations and company standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area on job sites and in field service vehicles.
Qualifications:
Technical Skills
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and drivetrain components.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Experience operating or repairing heavy construction equipment is preferred.
  • Welding and fabrication skills are a plus.
Technology Proficiency
  • Basic computer and mobile device skills for completing digital work orders and maintenance logs.
  • Ability to learn internal systems used for inventory tracking and maintenance documentation.
This is a non-exhaustive list of role responsibilities.  Other duties may be required to ensure smooth operation of the maintenance function.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic work environment and additional essential functions
  • This role is an on-site, outdoors position that requires work in all types of weather conditions.
  • This position performs strenuous physical activities for long periods, under varying and adverse field conditions.
  • This position must be able to lift and/or carry up to 75 lbs.
  • This role will be required to stand, walk on uneven surfaces, manually manipulate, grasp, reach out and above the shoulder, climb, kneel, bend, twist, and push/pull.
  • This role is occasionally required to work at elevated heights.
  • This role will require occasional travel.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required
    • Class B CDL preferred but not required
  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety certification preferred
  • Manufacturer or dealer training on heavy equipment maintenance and repair is a plus
