Job Description - Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HVAC)



Position Overview


The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HVAC) performs maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and overhaul of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems installed on heavy mobile equipment, military tactical vehicles, shelters, and material-handling assets. The mechanic ensures all HVAC systems meet operational specifications and environmental standards to support mission readiness across Army logistics operations.


Key Responsibilities


HVAC System Maintenance & Repair



  • Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC systems on heavy equipment, tactical vehicles, and specialized military platforms.

  • Service air conditioning systems including compressors, condensers, evaporators, blower motors, lines, ducts, controls, and refrigerant systems.

  • Recover, recharge, and replace refrigerants in accordance with EPA regulations and OEM requirements.

  • Test system performance using gauges, electronic diagnostic tools, and leak-detection equipment.

  • Repair or replace electrical components, thermostats, relays, switches, sensors, and control circuits within HVAC systems.


Heavy Equipment Mechanical Support



  • Assist in general mechanical maintenance of assigned heavy equipment including hydraulics, powertrains, engines, and electrical systems when required.

  • Perform Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) in accordance with applicable Technical Manuals (TMs).

  • Support major component removal and replacement related to HVAC system access or integration.


Documentation & Compliance



  • Maintain accurate HVAC maintenance records, parts usage, and service data in GCSS-Army or other authorized maintenance systems.

  • Ensure compliance with Army, OSHA, EPA, and organizational maintenance and safety standards.

  • Follow proper handling and disposal procedures for refrigerants, chemicals, and hazardous materials.

  • Assist in technical inspections to verify serviceability of HVAC systems and related components.


Quality Assurance & Safety



  • Ensure all repairs meet technical, safety, and environmental standards prior to equipment release.

  • Conduct functional performance tests and verify operational readiness after repairs.

  • Maintain accountability of tools and test equipment and uphold shop and environmental safety protocols.


Teamwork & Technical Support



  • Provide technical guidance to junior mechanics on HVAC systems and maintenance procedures.

  • Coordinate with supervisors, production control, and other shop personnel to support maintenance priorities.

  • Support field operations or on-site HVAC troubleshooting when required.


Required Qualifications



  • Experience performing HVAC maintenance on heavy equipment, tactical vehicles, military shelters, or commercial equipment.

  • EPA Section 608 certification (Type I, II, or Universal).

  • Knowledge of refrigerant systems, electrical circuits, diagnostics, and HVAC control systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret Technical Manuals (TMs), wiring diagrams, and schematics.

  • Proficiency with HVAC diagnostic tools and recovery/recycling equipment.

  • Ability to meet physical requirements and work in shop or field environments.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Military background in HVAC or vehicle maintenance (e.g., 91C, 91J, 91X, or civilian HVAC certification).

  • Experience with GCSS-Army or equivalent maintenance tracking systems.

  • ASE or manufacturer-specific certifications related to HVAC systems.


Physical & Environmental Requirements



  • Ability to lift 50 lbs or more.

  • Work in indoor/outdoor environments, including extreme temperatures.

  • Frequent bending, climbing, kneeling, and working in confined areas.

  • Required use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
