The Medical Laboratory Scientist/ Medical Technologist (MLS/MT)-Hematology is responsible for key operator roles in the assigned instruments. They oversee all quality assurance operations and documentation. They will properly manage training, training documentation, and employee competencies on the hematology analyzers and quality control programs. They are responsible for independently performing, interpreting and correlating clinical laboratory tests to assist physician diagnosis and treatment. The MLS/MT-Hematology lead follows laboratory policies and procedures in accordance with all regulatory agency requirements (CAP, JCAHO, AABB, OSHA, CLIA). The MLS/MT determines that test results meet requirements of the quality control program and if not met, repeats test and ensures results are approved for reporting following department policy and maintaining all necessary records and documentation. The MLS/MT is expected to utilize critical thinking skills and complex problem solving in the resolution of clinical and instrument problems.
A. Bachelor’s degree from a college or university.
B. Registry or registry eligible for MLS/MT (ASCP) or equivalent. Must take ASCP exam within six months of hire date and obtain registry within twelve (12) months of hire date.
C. Ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain competency as required for job title and the unit/area(s) of assignment.
D. Excellent communication skills to include oral and written comprehension/expression.
E. Computers skills (i.e., print, and fax).
F. Ability and willingness to work with patients of all ages and development levels.
G. Ability to manage a chaotic work environment related to a variety of stat and routine testing requests, testing, and or instrument problems, and constant need to prioritize duties.
H. Ability and willingness to exhibit behaviors consistent with standards for performance improvement and organizational values (e.g., efficiency & financial responsibility, safety, partnership & service, teamwork, compassion, integrity, and trust & respect).
I. Learn and operate medical center equipment such as computers, paging systems, telephones, intercoms, fax machines, copiers, and printers.
J. Learn and perform previously unfamiliar tasks and instrument operation as required for performance of the job of medical technologist.
K. Ability and willingness to exhibit behaviors consistent with principles for service excellence
