JOB TITLE:
Herbicide Applicator I (Grounds Maintenance)


Bargaining Unit Status: Grounds Bargaining Unit

FULL-TIME (hours per week): 40 M-F 7:00AM-3:30PM with occasional Saturday

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to read and write, and keep accurate records of herbicide/pesticide applications.
  • 6 months to one years’ experience in herbicide application in an outdoor setting preferred.
  • Additional Preferred Qualifications:  Willingness to obtain Alabama (OTPS) commercial herbicide applicators license preferred.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be authorized for coverage under agency insurance if operating agency vehicle, have good driving record, valid Alabama driver’s license, and/or required level of personal auto insurance.
  • Must be able to satisfactorily complete a background check, per company requirements.
  • Listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate with tact and maintain confidentiality.
  • Adequate ability in communicating in spoken conversation – adequate volume speech.
  • Ability to effectively build and maintain positive working relationships with management and peers.
  • Current Phoenix employees only:  To be eligible, must meet the following requirements:
    • No more than a Step 1 discipline in the last 12 months.
    • Total unpaid absences (to include tardy and/or leave early) not to exceed 5% of the scheduled workdays within the past 12 months (not to include any paid leave, FMLA, rain days, or base closures).

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES SUMMARY:
Apply herbicides/pesticides as directed in a manner that gives effective control of target pest, causes no damage to non-target plant or animal life, and follows the Redstone Arsenal Pesticide Program’s safety and application requirements. Ensures that all services performed are in accordance with contract requirements and company policy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specifics are Outlined in the Performance Work Statement):
  • Mix and apply herbicides/pesticides as directed by the Zone Manager.
  • Mix and apply herbicides/pesticides according to label directions and RSA regulations to effectively control target pests while taking precautions to avoid damage to non-target plant or animal life            
  • Be aware of environmental conditions, and know what conditions under which herbicides/pesticides should and should not be applied.
  • Follow all safety and application requirements in the Redstone Arsenal Pesticide Program.
  • Maintain accurate records of what herbicides/pesticides are applied, how much, rate of application, and location.
  • Maintain spray equipment in optimum condition, cleaning tanks regularly and properly.
  • Report any spills or possible non-target damage as soon as possible to your supervisor.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES RELATED TO THIS POSITION MAY INCLUDE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as required to fulfill customer contract obligations or changes based on customer needs.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to perform work outdoors in all seasons (outdoor work is subject to temperature extremes and inclement weather.  Work is expected to continue during light rains).
  • Ability to operator a motor vehicle for up to 2 hours at a time on uneven and sometimes rough terrain.
  • Physical stamina to work at least 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to be independently mobile on all surfaces and situations.  This positions requires considerable walking for up to 6 to 8 hours per day on uneven and sometimes rough terrain (e.g., outdoor unfinished grounds, lawns, paved/finished surface, and includes up to 45 degrees).
  • Ability to safety retrieve items weighing up to 50 pounds from high and low areas, and ability to safety transport these items from one work area to the next.
  • Ability to work alone for extended periods of time.
  • Adequate hearing required for conversation, telephone use, and emergency information systems.

  • Must be able to analyze many variables and choose the most effective course of action for the organization at any given point in time.
