Job Description - High School English Language (ELA) Teacher

Job Description: Dził Ditł'ooí School of Empowerment, Action & Perseverance (DEAP) is seeking a dedicated and culturally grounded High School English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher to join our team for the 2025–2026 school year. This is an in-person role at our school located on the Navajo Nation. We are looking for someone who not only has strong ELA instructional skills but who also understands, respects, and incorporates Diné culture, language, and perspectives into their teaching. The ideal candidate will live within a commutable distance to the school and be committed to empowering Indigenous youth through literacy and storytelling.
Key Responsibilities:
Teach high school ELA courses aligned with state and tribal standards (e.g., 9th–12th grade English, Creative Writing, or Literature)
Integrate Diné stories, values, and community experiences into reading and writing instruction
Foster a culturally safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment
Plan and deliver engaging lessons that support reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing skills
Assess student progress and adjust instruction based on student needs
Collaborate with other staff members, including Diné language and culture teachers
Participate in school events, field experiences, and professional development
Build positive relationships with students, families, and the broader community
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
Valid secondary teaching license or eligibility to become licensed in New Mexico
Deep understanding of or personal connection to Diné culture, values, and community life
Prior teaching experience preferred, especially with Indigenous or rural students
Strong skills in literacy instruction, culturally responsive pedagogy, and classroom management
Must live within a commutable distance to the school and have reliable transportation
Navajo-speaking candidates or those with tribal affiliation are strongly encouraged to apply
Job Details: The position is full time and in person.
Salary & Benefits: The starting compensation for this role is based on licensure. The pay ranges from $55-75K depending on the level of licensure. In addition to the base salary, the position includes a comprehensive benefits package with health insurance, paid time off, and opportunities for professional development.
