Job Description - Higher Education Liaison

SUMMARY:


Under the direct supervision of the PIIC Education Director, the Higher Education Liaison provides assistance to College and Trade School resources for students and adults for the Tribal Membership to attend or visit prospective schools. This individual will assist in helping coordinate needed requirements for admissions for any Tribal Member if needed. The Liaison will help in applying for scholarships, grants, or just admissions for enrollment to a University, College or Trade School. Help in discussion if needed for Tribal Member in enrollment of classes, and to provide and coordinate tutoring and other needs for continued help for a successful experience in school education. Also coordinate online interest for those Tribal Members to see and work from their own computers to research for colleges, Trade Schools and possible funding for admissions. Lastly, the Liaison will communicate with Tribal Members throughout the school year to see if any help is needed by phone, email, and letters.


 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:


The following duties and responsibilities are not meant to be all inclusive and may be adjusted to meet business needs.


 


The following duties are examples of assignments performed by the Liaison, and is not restricted to needs for helping Tribal Member’s experiences in attending College or Trade Schools.



  • Provide College or Trade School assistance and resources to students and adults to a variety of career and college pathways.

  • Meet and talk with Juniors and Seniors and adult Tribal Members throughout the states about career interests and goals

  • Create a college or Trade School plan for students to meet their goals for a successful school year.

  • Assist Tribal Members apply for financial aid, scholarships, or BIA assistance if applicable.

  • Assist in registration for classes, housing, and possible daycare.

  • Communicate between students, professors and other school personnel if the Tribal Member has the proper paperwork filled out by Tribal Member for assistance for every semester, quarter or school year.

  • Continued oversight of all students and adults throughout the school year, by phone, email, or letters.

  • Prepare and provide written reports to the PIIC Education Director on a monthly basis

  • Communicate to the High School Liaison for any or all materials for helping Students or adults

  • Continued communications with the Education Director weekly, monthly, yearly with occurring issues or department policies that may affect any Tribal Members.

  • Written report of the years end of how everything has gone for assisting Tribal Members

  • Provide/setup college visits to Universities and Tribal schools and Colleges

  • Other duties as assigned


 


 


QUALIFICATIONS:




  • Bachelor’s degree or currently enrolled with expected completion within 6 months

  • At least 1 year of experience working with individuals in a classroom setting or in a professional educational role.

  • At least 1 year experience in Universities, Tribal Colleges entries and Trade Schools admissions and applications.

  • At least 1 year of experience counseling students with academic needs.

  • Good record keeping skills, journal record keeping

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Ability to maintain strict standards of confidentiality

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong computer skills Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)

  • Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision

  • Ability to work with the Education Department staff

  • Sensitive to Native American Culture

  • Must pass drug screen (UA) and a federal criminal background check in compliance with the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act.

  • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability



PHYSICAL DEMANDS:*



  • Must have the ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds when needed

  • Must be able to sit for periods of time with occasional standing and walking


REQUIRED TRAINING:



  • Effectively handling harassment training

  • Any position-related training as determined by Education Director discretion



WORKING ENVIRONMENT:



  • Work is performed primarily in an office setting, but could include on the road travel and meet and greets
