Histology Technician (Per Diem)

Description

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

• High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Associate degree is preferred.
• Current degree or certificate from an accredited histology technician certificate program.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to work flexible schedule 
• Must be able to pass all pre-employment screening (background check, drug tests, and references)
• Must provide proof of education and/or certification/licensure

PHYSICAL STANDARDS:

Positions in this class of employment are situated in a standard medical office environment where there is little or no exposure to variations in the weather or other similar elements. Physical agility must be such that the Histology Technician is able to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time. This position has contact with physicians, staff and patients and calls for daily interaction throughout the course of the shift. The Histology Technician should be able to lift up to 25 pounds repeatedly and 65 pounds intermittently. There is potential exposure to blood, body fluid/tissue, and infectious wastes. There is also potential exposure to radiation, chemicals, and toxicants.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Operates precision equipment and works with a variety of dyes and chemicals to make tissue abnormalities visible with a microscope
• Preparing thin slices of human tissue on slides for analysis by:
  • Examining, fixing, and processing the tissue for proper sample preservation
  • Surrounding he tissue with paraffin wax in a process called embedding
  • Cutting  a tissue sample with a microtome or cryostat
  • Mounting the tissue sample on a slide
  • Staining or dying the sample to emphasize abnormalities
• Testing tissue according to what the pathologist needs
• As  needed, management of supplies, laboratory quality-control procedures.
