Position: Full time, 36 hour/week NIGHTS, salaried, exempt non union. 

                                                                 JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Functions as on-duty administrator for all hospital departments during evening, night, weekend, and holiday hours.  
  2. Makes frequent rounds throughout hospital to assess and evaluate the quality of patient care and the overall work environment.
  3. Seeks advice and support from Administrator On-Call, Chief Nursing Officer and/or appropriate nursing director as needed and appropriate. 
  4. Communicates situations requiring awareness, attention, and/or follow up to appropriate department heads. Provides written documentation when indicated.
  5. Obtains, maintains, and demonstrates basic clinical competence in patient care services provided @ PVH, including, but not limited to, medical/surgical, ED, and ICU. 
  6. Assesses the number of nursing personnel needed to provide safe patient care utilizing data from acuity system, staff input and personal clinical judgment. 
  7. Adjusts staffing appropriately.
  8. Ensures patient care is provided and documented in accordance with the nursing process and established policies, procedures and protocols.
  9. Obtains medications from Pharmacy after hours, records removal appropriately, mixes IV solutions as necessary, all in accordance with established Pharmacy policies.
  10. Assists in development and implementation of staff learning plans for orientation, training, education and competence (including age-specific competence).
  11. Identifies and resolves problems and needs. 
  12. Implements and documents appropriate follow-up actions.
  13. Develops and supports cost containment methods; provides capital budget input. 
  14. Serves on nursing and hospital-wide committees as assigned.
  15. Assists in maintaining an effective quality improvement program.
  16. Provides direction to teaching efforts for patients and families.
  17. Manages time effectively for proper balance between administrative, clinical, and other organizational responsibilities.
  18. Suggests ideas for improvement on a regular basis within his/her own work group and for hospital-wide quality improvement.
  19. Works in an organized manner and manages time to complete work assignments and meet deadlines.
  20. Bases all decisions on the hospital’s mission, vision, and values.
  21. Evaluates current processes and recommends priorities for improvement.
  22. Creates, maintains and promotes a safe work environment.
  23. Troubleshoots patient care equipment, seeks outside assistance as needed.
  24. Establishes, maintains and improves communications with and between customers and suppliers.
  25. Demonstrates support for established policies and procedures to reduce variance and improve communication.
  26. Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures and local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
  27. Ensures compliance with Professional/Technical and Support/Clerical labor agreements.
  28. Promotes the hospital and its employees through demonstration of professional behavior.
  29. Provides assistance to family members and the general public.
  30. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to implement procedures in event of internal or external disaster.
  31. Serves as a resource to hospital and medical staff; e.g. responds to requests for information and advice, serves as a liaison between nursing and other hospital departments and outside health care agencies.
  32. Assesses and improves staff performance with constructive feedback, counseling, and conflict management.
  33. Reviews patient care assignments and ensures appropriateness.
  34. Continually evaluates standards of nursing practice by reviewing nursing care plans, assessing patients, reviewing charts, interviewing, observing, participating in QI activities, and employing other means of evaluation.  
  35. Participates in revision of practice standards as appropriate.
  36. Reports all incidents using appropriate methods.
  37. Follows through on assigned work and projects; meets schedules/deadlines.
  38. Participates in cooperative development of equitable nurse manager schedule.
  39. May participate in processing of payroll as requested.
  40. Demonstrates EMR competence and serves as an EMR resource for staff.

Quality Improvement: Assumes primary responsibility for developing, implementing and monitoring Department-specific Quality Improvement initiatives and projects in support of the Hospital’s Quality Improvement Program through: 1.) Monitoring key areas for quality performance on high volume, high risk, high impact and/or problem prone activities in safety, effectiveness, patient impact, timeliness and efficiency; 2.) Identifying issues/problems, developing and implementing solutions and expectations for improvement and consistently monitoring progress and results; 3.) Reporting Departmental quality improvement initiatives to the Quality Improvement Committee; 4.) Educating, leading and motivating Department staff in an acute awareness of and ongoing commitment to the Hospital’s Quality Improvement Program and their role therein; 5.)Collaborating with other Departments as appropriate in full support of initiatives and improvements in patient safety and care.

Emergency Management: As an employee of Penobscot Valley Hospital, the position has an inherent role to care for our community members when in need. To this regard, the incumbent will be expected to participate in emergency/disaster preparedness planning and drills as requested. When called upon during a real life disaster/emergency event, the incumbent will be expected to participate in the Hospital’s response to this event, within the scope of professional and personal ability to do so. 

                                                   

Requirements

Current Maine nursing license, BSN preferred. Ability to problem solve; critical thinking skills; effective verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge base to include nursing assessment and skills for all age groups from neonate to geriatrics. BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC and STABLE certifications required. Two years of recent progressively responsible leadership experience preferred.
