Full-time

Description

Ranger Field Services | Lonestar Electric Supply

Description

Veterans are encouraged to apply.

Ranger Field Services is seeking a Senior Field Service Technician – Power Systems to serve as a hands-on, field-based technical leader supporting the startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting of electrical power systems.

This role is primarily in the field, working independently at customer sites to ensure systems are installed, tested, and energized safely and efficiently. You will partner with customers, contractors, engineers, and internal teams to deliver high-quality service while maintaining strict adherence to safety standards.

What You’ll Do

Field Leadership:

Serve as the on-site technical lead for field projects, working independently to execute complex commissioning and testing activities. Provide guidance and mentorship to junior technicians while coordinating with customers, contractors, and engineering teams to ensure successful project execution.

System Startup & Commissioning

Lead startup, commissioning, and acceptance testing of electrical systems including medium voltage switchgear, low voltage switchgear, switchboards, motor control centers (MCCs), and variable frequency drives (VFDs). Support safe system energization and turnover to customers while ensuring all systems operate as designed.

Testing & Troubleshooting

Perform advanced electrical testing such as insulation resistance, contact resistance, relay testing, and functional verification. Diagnose and resolve complex system issues in real time while interpreting one-line diagrams, schematics, and control logic.

Planning & Execution

Review project scope, drawings, and testing requirements prior to execution to ensure readiness. Ensure proper setup, calibration, and use of all test equipment and make real-time technical decisions during commissioning and system energization activities.

Safety & Compliance

Ensure strict adherence to OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E standards, and company safety policies. Identify and mitigate electrical hazards in field environments while following proper energized work practices and arc flash safety requirements.

Reporting & Documentation

Prepare complete, accurate, and customer-ready field service reports documenting testing results, deficiencies, and corrective actions. Maintain clear and consistent communication with project stakeholders throughout the duration of field activities.

Continuous Improvement

Support ongoing improvement of field service processes and standards by sharing lessons learned and best practices. Maintain and expand technical knowledge related to evolving power system technologies and equipment.

Technical Knowledge (Required)

Strong understanding of medium voltage and low voltage power distribution systems is required, along with working knowledge of commissioning and testing procedures. Candidates must have experience interpreting electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and control systems, as well as advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities.

Strong knowledge of NFPA 70E electrical safety requirements and OSHA electrical safety standards is expected. Familiarity with NETA testing standards, protective relays, control systems, and OEM equipment such as Siemens, Eaton, Schneider, and ABB is preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Work primarily in the field at customer sites performing commissioning, startup, and testing activities. Lead advanced electrical diagnostics and troubleshooting efforts while interpreting technical drawings and specifications. Coordinate with project stakeholders in real time and mentor junior technicians. Ensure compliance with all safety standards, prepare detailed service and testing reports, and travel locally to support multiple project sites. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Candidates should have 5 to 10 or more years of experience in field service, commissioning, or electrical testing, along with experience working on medium and low voltage power systems. Proven ability to lead field projects independently is required.

Certifications

NETA Certification at Level II through IV is preferred, along with a Journeyman or Master Electrician license.

What Sets You Apart

Successful candidates demonstrate a strong field presence and the ability to lead independently. They possess advanced problem-solving and troubleshooting skills and can make decisions effectively in high-pressure environments. Strong communication and customer-facing skills, along with a commitment to safety and quality workmanship, are essential.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based and involves local travel within the Houston area. Work is performed in industrial, outdoor, and electrical environments. Occasional extended hours may be required during commissioning and energization activities, though overnight travel is minimal.

Physical Requirements

The position requires the ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, and bend in field environments such as substations, job sites, and electrical rooms. The technician must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and use mechanical or team assistance for heavier loads. The role requires wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, including arc-flash protection, and working extended or non-standard hours when necessary.

Benefits

Medical, dental, life, and vision insurance are provided along with a 401(k)-retirement plan with company match. Employees also receive paid time off and holiday pay.
