Job Description - Human Factors Design Engineer (NASA HHPC)

On the Human Health and Performance Contract we are at the forefront of safeguarding astronaut health, ensuring human performance, and advancing technologies for human space exploration. We are seeking an Human Factors Design Engineer at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX.

In this role, you will be a critical member of the Anthropometry and Biomechanics Facility (ABF) in the Anthropometry, Injury Biomechanics and Ergonomics Lab (AIBEL) in the Biomedical Research and Environmental Sciences Division at NASA Johnson Space Center. The ABF performs anthropometric, biomechanical, ergonomic, and human factors evaluations of ground and flight equipment and procedures, including evaluation of current and future space suit designs. The ABF utilizes motion analysis systems, force sensing devices, anthropometric measuring devices, and computer modeling/analysis to ensure that all astronauts have hardware that is safe and accommodates them appropriately.

AIBEL works with vehicle, habitat and suit designers across multiple NASA Programs, including the EVA and Human Surface Mobility Program, Commercial Crew Program, International Space Station, Gateway, Human Landing System and Orion. Your work will be cross-disciplinary, interfacing with scientists, engineers, hardware designers and physiologists across the NASA and vendor communities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with the ABF Technical Lead to assess anthropometry, human factors, ergonomics, biomechanics, and risk of injury
  • Assist with preparation of support documentation for studies, including Institutional Review Board protocols, test plans, test readiness review packages, etc.
  • Perform equipment set-up, calibration, and monitoring for tests/evaluations
  • Carry out experiments with human test subjects
  • Assist with reduction and analysis of test data, including application of appropriate statistical methods
  • Assist with preparation of technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations
  • Present technical results at internal meetings and scientific conferences, as required
  • Archive data per NASA policy
  • Provide inputs to weekly and monthly status reports
  • Demonstrate a positive problem-solving attitude with an enthusiasm for working as part of an exceptional team
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic and commitment to the customer and team
  • Serve as a test subject for protocol and hardware evaluations on a volunteer basis
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

What You Bring:

You use your experience and judgment to work with scientists and engineers in the ABF to complete operational evaluations and analyses. Tasks will include study design, data collection, data reduction and analysis, and preparation of technical reports and presentations. Where needed, you provide quick responses to tough Programmatic questions based on careful interpretation of data, ensuring that NASA can make the safest, data-backed decisions related to ongoing missions. You comply with the HHPC-2 Contract’s Safety, Health and Environmental Plan, Quality Plan, and all safety policies and procedures, and complete all assigned training.

Required Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human factors/ergonomics, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field, plus 5 years of related experience, or a combination of graduate-level education and experience.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Highly motivated with strong organizational skills and the ability to support multiple projects.
  • Understanding of human performance capabilities and human-system interactions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, both formal and informal.
  • Strong programming skills, including Python, R, and/or MATLAB.
  • Proficiency in standard PC and Microsoft Office tools for document and presentation preparation.

Desired Education and Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in human factors/ergonomics, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • Experience with NASA standards and requirements or similar experience in military, academia, or industries with broad human factors, ergonomics, and anthropometry requirements.
  • Experience conducting or supporting human health and performance research.
  • Knowledge of occupational musculoskeletal disorders/injuries.
  • Experience with motion capture systems and analysis of kinematic data.
  • Experience with bioinstrumentation and data acquisition systems.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis methods.
  • Proficiency in CAD and human modeling tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, ProE, Blender.
  • Experience in artificial intelligence or machine learning.
  • Expertise in 3D analytical assessment of geometry.
