Orwashers

Orwashers Bakery (Orwashers.com) is a New York City institution, founded in 1916 in a small storefront on the Upper East Side. Today, Orwashers continues to be known for its New York classics including rye bread, pumpernickel, bagels, rugelach, black and white cookies and so much more.



In addition to selling bread to many of New York’s top restaurants and gourmet grocery stores, Orwashers currently operates three retail bakeries in Manhattan and Long Island. We also deliver our breads and baked goods throughout Manhattan and distribute to carefully selected partners nationwide. While the company has grown since its humble beginnings over a century ago, the same values remain baked in: handmade classic breads and baked goods made fresh, locally, and with love each day.

What You Will Do

As Human Resources Director, you will own the full people function for Orwashers, covering hourly and salaried employees across production, wholesale, and retail. Reporting to the CFO/COO, you will be the decision-maker for HR, bringing the structure, systems, and reporting needed to support a growing business.

Responsibilities:

• Lead employee relations for both hourly and salaried teams, serving as a trusted, fair, and decisive resource for employees and managers


• Own benefits administration, including open enrollment and ACA compliance and reporting


• Ensure compliance with federal, New York State, and NYC employment laws and maintain the employee handbook and HR policies.


• Oversee compensation for hourly and salaried employees, including pay differentials, and partner with leadership on pay decisions


• Build and run a consistent performance review process, working with department leaders


• Streamline the hiring process from end to end, including screening candidates and partnering with managers on hiring decisions


• Manage ADP and HR systems, identifying and implementing tools that improve efficiency and reporting


• Create SOPs for core HR functions and produce regular HR reporting for leadership


• Champion culture and engagement, including organizing company events

Who You Are

We’re looking for a hands-on HR leader with experience in a manufacturing or production environment, someone who’s just as comfortable on the floor with hourly employees as in front of senior leadership. If you thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial setting and bring a strong sense of urgency, this role could be a great fit.

Qualifications:

• 8+ years of progressive HR experience, including time as the senior HR leader in a manufacturing, food production, or similar hourly workforce environment


• Deep experience with employee relations, benefits administration, open enrollment, and ACA compliance


• Solid understanding of NY State and NYC employment law


• Working knowledge of hourly and salaried compensation, including pay differentials


• Experience building performance review processes, hiring processes, and HR SOPs


• Hands-on experience with ADP; experience implementing additional HR systems is a plus


• Strong communication skills, with the ability to build and present HR reports


• Able to work on-site in the South Bronx Monday through Friday


• Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related field
