What are we looking for?

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, organizational development, or a related field, and
  • Two years of generalist-level human resources experience

     

Alternative combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by case basis.  

Required Competencies\: 

  • Knowledge of human resources and the ability to effective explain human resources programs and policies;
  • Knowledge of human resources information systems;
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills;
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills;
  • Ability to function under pressure and manage conflicting points of view;
  • Ability to demonstrate discretion, integrity, and fair mindedness; and
  • Ability to manage multiple sensitive or controversial issues simultaneously.

What is this career opportunity?

We are seeking a self motivated Human Resources Generalist to join our Enterprise (Central) HR Team within the State Human Resources Division. This position supports the State of Montana's human resources centralization initiative by providing HR services to Central HR staff and agency-embedded Human Resources Officers. This position builds and maintains effective working partnerships with the state human resources community and performs the following HR functions\: 

  • Supports full‑cycle recruitment, including posting positions, screening applicants, scheduling and participating in interviews, and communicating with candidates.
  • Coordinates onboarding activities such as new‑hire paperwork, orientation, and employee setup.
  • Enters and maintains employee information in the HRIS, ensuring accuracy and data integrity.
  • Assists with payroll processing by verifying hours, reviewing timesheets, and preparing necessary adjustments.
  • Maintains personnel files and ensure compliance with record‑keeping requirements.
  • Responds to employee inquiries regarding HR policies, benefits, and procedures.
  • Helps develop and coordinate training sessions other HR initiatives.
  • Participates in policy updates, process improvements, and HR project work as assigned.
