Position Description
The Human Resources Generalist supports the day-to-day administration of CAF's Human Resources department by coordinating employee lifecycle activities, HR operations, compliance, and HR systems. Working closely with the Director of Human Resources, the HR Generalist helps ensure an exceptional employee experience by providing administrative and operational support for recruitment, onboarding, benefits, leave administration, performance management, employee relations, and compliance.

The HR Generalist serves as a resource for managers and team members, maintains accurate HR records and systems, supports HR reporting and process improvements, and assists with implementing HR initiatives that strengthen organizational effectiveness.



Compensation



  • Salary range: $60,732-$74,978 (based on experience and qualifications).

  • All full-time employees are eligible for the full benefits package including:

    • 401K with up to 5% employer match.

    • Unlimited paid time off, including a mandatory four weeks off.

    • Paid parental leave.

    • 100% employer-paid health insurance premiums (medical, dental, vision) with 50% dependent coverage.

    • Observance of federal holidays.





Work Schedule & Location



  • A full-time work week is a minimum of 32 hours over four days.

  • Illinois residence is required. Relocation fees are not provided by CAF.

  • Hybrid schedule: minimum two days in the office per week (West Loop, Chicago).



Essential Job Functions



HR Operations (approximately 90%)



HR Compliance & Systems 



  • Maintain employee records, personnel files, and HR documentation in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.

  • Support compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.

  • Assist with maintaining and updating employee handbook policies, HR procedures, forms, and internal resources.

  • Support the administration of collective bargaining agreement provisions and maintain HR practices consistent with contractual obligations, organizational policy, and applicable labor laws

  • Conduct regular audits of employee records, HR systems, benefits data, and personnel files.

  • Support the administration of HR technology platforms, including ADP Workforce Now and PerformYard.

  • Assist with generation of  HR reports, process improvements, and special projects.

  • Ensure confidentiality, accuracy, and integrity of HR data and records.


Employee Engagement & Lifecycle Administration 



  • Support team member and manager inquiries regarding HR policies, procedures, HR systems, benefits, payroll, and leave.

  • Facilitate and coordinate new hire paperwork, system access, orientation scheduling, and onboarding communications.

  • Support employee offboarding processes, including exit interviews, system access removal, and documentation.

  • Assist with employee accommodations and return-to-work processes.

  • Support employee engagement initiatives and organizational culture-building activities.

  • Support coordination of HR communications and maintain employee resource materials.


Benefits, Payroll & Leave Administration



  • Support benefits administration, including open enrollment, new hire enrollments, qualifying life events, and employee education.

  • Assist with liaison responsibilities between employees, benefit providers, brokers, and third-party administrators.

  • Assist with leave administration, including FMLA, ADA accommodations, parental leave, and other leave programs.

  • Collaborate with Finance to support payroll processing, timekeeping administration, and employee data accuracy.

  • Audit benefit enrollments, payroll deductions, and employee records for accuracy.


Performance Management & Talent Development 



  • Support administration of CAF's performance management process through PerformYard.

  • Assist with performance review timelines, communications, reporting, and employee support.

  • Assist with employee development initiatives, training coordination, and leadership development programs.

  • Maintain training records and support compliance-related training requirements.


Recruiting & Talent Acquisition Support 



  • Support recruitment activities including job postings, interview scheduling, candidate communications, and hiring documentation.

  • Assist with updating job descriptions.

  • Coordinate candidate and new hire experiences throughout the hiring process.

  • Maintain recruitment records and applicant tracking processes.



Other (approximately 10%)



  • Contribute to HR projects and continuous process improvement initiatives.

  • Works pro-actively and in good faith to support and strengthen the overall stability and effectiveness of the organization.

  • Maintains a collaborative, positive, professional and friendly approach to working with supervisor, other staff, and external stakeholders.

  • Co-create and maintain an organizational culture that fosters deep collaboration, trust, and coordination across functional organizational areas. 

  • Actively participate in required CAF meetings and respond in a timely manner to CAF staff communications. 

  • Represent CAF in external partnerships, coalitions, and movement building spaces 

  • Update professional knowledge by participating in educational opportunities approved by CAF, maintaining networks, and participating in professional organizations as relevant to your role 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor. 



Qualifications & Experience



  • 3+ years of progressive Human Resources experience.

  • PHR, SHRM-CP, or comparable HR certification preferred.

  • Commitment to reproductive justice and abortion access for all people.

  • Knowledge of intersectionality and the impact of privilege and oppression on access to abortion.

  • Ability to integrate a racial equity lens into HR practices and employee experiences.

  • Experience supporting employee lifecycle processes, including recruitment, onboarding, benefits, leave administration, employee records, and performance management.

  • Experience working with HRIS platforms (ADP Workforce Now preferred) and performance management systems (PerformYard or similar).

  • Highly organized systems thinker who enjoys improving processes, creating efficient workflows, and identifying opportunities to strengthen HR operations

  • Knowledge of employment laws and HR compliance practices.

  • Experience supporting HR functions in a unionized workplace and working within the framework of a collective bargaining agreement preferred

  • Experience generating reports and maintaining confidential information..

  • Strong customer service orientation with the ability to build trust, communicate clearly, and provide responsive support to employees and managers

  • Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Zoom, Slack, and project management software; strong technical aptitude with the ability to quickly learn and effectively leverage HR systems and technology to improve efficiency and data accuracy

  • Experience supporting HR functions in a unionized environment preferred.

  • Self-motivated, resourceful, adaptable, collaborative, and able to manage multiple priorities.



Work Environment



  • Standard office equipment use required (computers, scanners).

  • Frequent sitting and virtual communications (email, video conferencing).

  • Some off-site work may be required; accessibility will be prioritized.

  • Evening and weekend work may occasionally be required.

  • Must be able to conduct business in English.
