Job Description - HVAC Technician Refrigerant Systems & Controls
MalaceHR is seeking an experienced HVAC Technician to support a large industrial manufacturing facility. This position will focus heavily on the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial HVAC and chiller systems while also supporting general facility maintenance work orders as needed.
The facility operates multiple large-tonnage chillers, including nine total chillers, with most units approximately 150 tons and two units approximately 500 tons. The ideal candidate will have strong commercial or industrial HVAC experience, hands-on chiller knowledge, and the flexibility to assist with a variety of mechanical and facility maintenance responsibilities.
This is a hands-on position in a lead- and acid-based industrial plant environment. Employees will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including a PAPR (Powered Air-Purifying Respirator) for up to eight hours per shift.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on industrial HVAC and refrigeration systems.
Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and maintain chillers, air handling units, rooftop units, DX systems, heat pumps, and related HVAC equipment.
Support maintenance of a chiller plant consisting of nine chillers, including equipment ranging from approximately 150 tons to 500 tons.
Perform refrigerant recovery, charging, leak detection, brazing, and other refrigerant-system repairs in accordance with EPA requirements.
Troubleshoot compressors, refrigerant circuits, motors, pumps, electrical components, controls, sensors, and related mechanical systems.
Perform preventive maintenance inspections and identify equipment issues before failures occur.
Monitor HVAC operating conditions and make appropriate system adjustments.
Read and interpret HVAC schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
Utilize HVAC diagnostic techniques including superheat and subcooling measurements.
Assist with equipment startups, system testing, and commissioning activities when required.
Work with building automation and control systems to monitor equipment operation and troubleshoot system issues.
Complete and document work orders, preventive maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment conditions through the site's CMMS.
Respond to a variety of facility maintenance work orders outside of HVAC responsibilities.
Assist with general mechanical and building maintenance activities as needed.
Communicate equipment conditions, repair needs, and recommended corrective actions to facility leadership.
Follow all site safety procedures and environmental requirements while working in an industrial manufacturing environment.
Properly utilize required PPE, including wearing a PAPR throughout the workday as required by site conditions.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
EPA Section 608 Universal Certification required.
Approximately 3+ years of commercial or industrial HVAC experience.
Hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting large commercial or industrial HVAC equipment.
Experience working with HVAC equipment in the 150–200-ton range or larger.
Working knowledge of refrigerant systems, compressors, mechanical components, and refrigeration circuits.
Ability to troubleshoot HVAC electrical systems and low-voltage controls.
Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment documentation.
Ability and willingness to perform general facility maintenance duties in addition to HVAC-specific work.
Ability to work safely while wearing required PPE, including a PAPR for extended periods.
Strong troubleshooting and mechanical aptitude.
Ability to work independently and effectively prioritize multiple maintenance work orders.
Preferred Qualifications
Chiller experience with equipment 300 tons or larger.
Experience maintaining 500-ton chillers or similar large-tonnage equipment.
5+ years of HVAC/chiller experience strongly preferred.
Industrial or manufacturing facility maintenance experience.
Experience with building automation systems such as Johnson Controls, Trane, Siemens, Honeywell, or Schneider.
Technical or vocational training in HVAC, refrigeration, or a related mechanical field.
NATE, HVAC Excellence, OEM-specific, or additional HVAC certifications.
Experience with CMMS/work order management systems.
Experience supporting HVAC equipment startups, commissioning, retrofits, or major repairs.
Work Environment
This position is located within an industrial manufacturing facility that includes lead- and acid-based operations. Employees must comply with all facility environmental, health, and safety requirements.
The position requires the use of appropriate PPE and will include wearing a Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR) for approximately eight hours per day.
Background & Pre-Employment Requirements
Candidates must successfully complete the required pre-employment screening process, including:
JLL Preferred Background Check Package through Accurate.
Baseline Lead and Zinc blood testing through Concentra during the background screening process.
Ongoing Lead and Zinc blood testing approximately every three months as required by the client/site.
Completion of a Release of Information Consent Form.
Any additional site-specific safety, medical, or onboarding requirements.
Interview Process
First Round: Virtual or phone interview, likely with the Facility Manager.
Second Round: Onsite interview.
Schedule & Overtime
Monday–Friday.
7:30 AM–4:00 PM.
