Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) advances the prosperity of the city and the progress of its people through intentional and sustained stewardship of over 10,200 acres of public land and waterways as well as through hundreds of safe, stimulating recreation, environmental, and cultural centers. PPR promotes the well-being and growth of the City’s residents by connecting them to the natural world around them, to each other, and to fun, physical, and social opportunities. PPR is responsible for the upkeep of historically significant Philadelphia events and specialty venues, and works collaboratively with communities and organizations in leading capital projects and the introduction of inventive programming. Position Summary
Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) seeks four (4) passionate and community-oriented individuals to serve as Illegal Dumping Park Ambassadors as part of a citywide initiative to reduce illegal dumping in public parks. This grant-funded position is a key component of an innovative, interdisciplinary program focused on prevention, enforcement, education, and community engagement in four priority park sites: Tacony Creek Park, Cobbs Creek Park, Fairmount Park, and Mifflin Square Park.
Illegal dumping is a persistent issue in many Philadelphia parks, particularly in communities that are historically underserved. This program aims to cut illegal dumping at target sites by 50% over two years by pairing rapid response and data-informed interventions with deep, sustained community partnerships. Park Ambassadors will be the trusted, visible presence in their assigned park area—leading outreach efforts, hosting quarterly engagement events with community groups, monitoring environmental conditions, and supporting enforcement through public education and coordination with other PPR teams.
Park Ambassadors will work in close collaboration with local environmental organizations, community-based organizations (CBOs), Park Friends Groups, Recreation Outreach Workers, Environmental Education ce4nters, Advisory Councils, and other relevant stakeholders to support a culture shift in how residents view, value, and steward their parks. Responsibilities include coordinating volunteer activities, organizing community meetings, distributing educational toolkits, and reporting dumping activity. Ambassadors will also receive training in conflict resolution and engagement strategies, equipping them to build meaningful relationships with residents and activate long-term change.
To support the program’s community-driven approach, applicants with lived experience in or strong connections to the neighborhoods surrounding the four priority parks are especially encouraged to apply. This may include familiarity with local organizations, experience working in or near these park spaces, or a personal investment in the well-being of these communities. PPR values the insight, trust, and relationships that locally rooted individuals bring to the role.
This role is an exciting opportunity for leaders who are passionate about environmental justice, urban greening, and public service to help shape a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming future for Philadelphia’s parks and the people who use them. Evening and weekend hours will be required.
