DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Legal Services Department provides trauma-informed and client-centered holistic services, including consultations, representation, legal advocacy and safety planning to members of the LGBTQIA2S+ communities, with a focus on serving transgender, non-binary and intersex adults, immigrants at-risk of deportation, and youth and seniors at risk of homelessness. Our clients are predominantly BIPOC survivors of violence and discrimination, including domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, hate crimes/incidents, and police/government misconduct. We have 4 inter-related projects: Community Legal Clinics, Legal Advocacy Project for Survivors/Anti-Violence Project, Immigration Law Project, and Homeless Youth and Housing Rights Project. Each project serves clients at multiple locations, including: the Trans Wellness Center in Koreatown, Mi Centro in Boyle Heights, Center South in Leimert Park, and the Village and the Youth Center—across from each other in Hollywood.
JOB SUMMARY: The Immigration Case Manager, Community Legal Clinics will be under the direction and supervision of and work closely with the Attorney Manager, Community Legal Clinics to strengthen case management capacity by supporting legal services for immigrants, with a focus on asylees, refugees, and victims of crime. The Case Manager will provide comprehensive support, community capacity building, and paralegal assistance that includes legal intakes, addressing urgent holistic issues related to legal or social issues and help triage community needs. The Case Manager will also address client needs at each site by referring community members to other Legal Services Department projects, clinics, pro-se workshops, volunteer attorneys, external service providers, other departments within the LGBT Center and outside agencies. The Case Manager will also work with Center staff, collaborate with the Volunteer Resources Department, work with volunteer attorneys, and assist the Attorney Manag69er, Community Legal Clinics with recruitment, training and placement of pro bono attorneys, paralegals, law students, administrative volunteers, and Lawyer Referral attorneys. Presence on- site and/or at community partner locations 4 days a week is required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Develop and implement individual case management plans for clients, ensuring that they receive comprehensive support tailored to their unique needs.
• Coordinate with staff attorneys, volunteer attorneys, and case managers from all projects within the Center to manage caseloads efficiently, to ensure timely and effective legal and supportive services, and to document progress and outcomes that result from our collective work.
• Conduct intake assessments, gather necessary documentation, fill out legal documents, filings, and forms, and maintain detailed case files. These functions include administrative support for the Community Legal Clinics and community sites that is related to legal support work, holistic wrap-around services, and community site delivery of services.
• Collaborate with the Attorney Manager, Community Legal Clinics and assist with legal cases, Know Your Rights workshops, legal trainings, client services, data reporting and other job-related duties and client needs.
• Collaborate with community-based organizations to enhance service delivery and build capacity within the immigrant communities, attend grant funder meetings, deliver services, and provide reports.
• Participate in specialized training and ongoing support sessions to maximize project impact.
• Develop and facilitate workshops and informational sessions to empower the community with legal knowledge and resources.
• Assist Attorney Manager, Community Legal Clinics and volunteer attorneys with legal research, document preparation, and filing of immigration applications and petitions.
• Provide support during client interviews, hearings, and other legal proceedings.
• Maintain up-to-date basic knowledge of immigration laws, housing law, and domestic violence law and policies to effectively support legal representation within Community Legal Clinics.
• Working alongside the Attorney Manager, Community Legal Clinics to ensure a holistic approach to legal services, addressing not only legal needs but also social, health, and economic challenges faced by clients.
• Engage other departments within the Los Angeles LGBT Center to connect clients with relevant services, such as health care, housing, and employment assistance.
• Offer specialized case management services to victims of crime within the immigration law context, to ensure that survivors have access to the necessary support and legal resources to navigate the justice system.
• Collaborate with the Center’s Survivor Services team to make sure that victims of crime are properly being serviced.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
• Knowledge of or experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBTQ people.
• A passion for the Center’s work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people.
• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Paralegal Studies, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum of one year of experience in case management, preferably within a legal services or immigrant support context and working with the LGBTQ+ BIPOC communities.
• Minimum of one year of experience in providing survivors of violence with services that are trauma-informed and empathetic.
• Minimum of one year of experience in providing successful case management, with demonstrated organizational and time management skills, and the ability to balance and prioritize multiple responsibilities, including providing legal intakes, legal filings, data reporting, and other administrative tasks that require attention to detail.
• Strong understanding of immigration laws and policies affecting asylees, refugees, and victims of crime; and experience in working with legal forms, specifically immigration law forms and processes involving asylum and humanitarian visas like U-visas and T-visas.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Commitment to the mission and values of the Los Angeles LGBT Center and dedication to serving the immigrant community.
• Experience in ensuring client safety, autonomy, agency, choice, and empowerment.
• Experience in being part of, creating and sustaining inclusive and engaging workspaces.
• Emotional intelligence and empathy necessary to build and maintain positive interactions, trust, and collaborations with clients, team members and volunteers of varied backgrounds, needs and capacities.
• Demonstrated commitment to self-care.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively convey complex legal information to non-lawyers.
• Bilingual skills, a plus (English/Spanish fluency preferred).
• Access to reliable transportation and the ability to be insured.
• Flexibility for occasional evening and community-based weekend work.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.
