Job Description - Immigration Legal Services Pro Bono Supervising Attorney

POSITION

The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center is seeking candidates for a Supervising Attorney for the MIRC Pro Bono Team, to be based in one of our Michigan offices - either Detroit, Lansing, Grand Rapids, or Kalamazoo - with the potential for a hybrid in-office/remote schedule.

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM

MIRC is a statewide legal resource center for immigrant communities and works to build a thriving Michigan where immigrant communities experience equity and belonging. The three pillars of our work are: 1) direct legal services; 2) systemic advocacy; and 3) community education and engagement. MIRC is part of Michigan Statewide Advocacy Services (MSAS), a non-profit law firm providing free legal services to individuals and families with low-income, Michigan’s immigrant communities, older adults and adults with disabilities through several statewide programs. Visit michiganimmigrant.org and michigansas.org for more information.

RESPONSIBILITIES

All MIRC supervising attorney roles involve supervising other staff, contributing to grant reporting, direct work on cases, and participating in leadership teamwork and decision-making. Employees will be expected to work from their assigned office, but hybrid remote work schedules are available.

The Pro Bono Supervising Attorney builds and manages MIRC’s pro bono and volunteer support model by recruiting, training, and mentoring attorneys who take referral matters. The role includes leading trainings on key practice issues, organizing workshops and limited-assistance opportunities, and continuously updating training and practice materials for volunteer use. This position also identifies and recruits additional professional support for cases, including expert witnesses and medical providers, and designs and oversees volunteer programs that expand staff capacity and strengthen support for active matters.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should be licensed to practice law in Michigan or be eligible to waive in or to take the next Michigan bar examination, should have experience in handling a immigration law caseload, and should demonstrate a commitment to serving low-income immigrant and other underserved communities. Because this is a management position, administrative and supervisory experience is preferred. Three years’ legal experience is required; five years’ legal experience is preferred. Excellent communication skills in English are required; communication skills in Spanish are preferred but not required.

BENEFITS

This is a full-time position with a starting salary of $ 72,520 based on years of relevant experience. MAP offers a generous benefits package including life, short- and long-term disability, health, vision, dental, and flexible spending accounts. If staff do not require health benefits, they have the option to take an annual $1,500 payout in addition to the base salary paid over the course of the year. MAP also has a generous leave policy allowing staff to accrue 3 weeks paid vacation the first year and 15 paid holidays, as well as a 401(k) retirement plan including employer match for eligible staff after 6 months of employment. MAP is a qualifying employer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

TIMEFRAME

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until positions are filled.
