The Infection Preventionist/Nurse Supervisor, R.N. plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the health of residents, staff, visitors, and the broader community by leading infection prevention and control initiatives. This dual role combines strategic oversight of infection prevention programs with nurse supervisory responsibilities, ensuring high standards of clinical care and compliance with regulatory requirements. Working closely with the Director of Nursing, Medical Director, and corporate leadership, you will develop and implement infection control strategies, educate staff, and oversee clinical operations to maintain a safe and healthy environment. This position requires strong leadership, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to mitigating infectious disease risks.
As an Infection Preventionist/Nurse Supervisor, R.N., your responsibilities include:
Collaborating with the Medical Director, Infectious Disease MD/NP, and Corporate Infection Preventionist to establish, implement, and evaluate annual infection prevention goals and action plans.
Partnering with facility leaders, physicians, and local, state, and national public health agencies to coordinate infection prevention and control activities.
Overseeing infection prevention, epidemiology, workplace hygiene, and safety programs to minimize risks across the facility.
Conducting ongoing surveillance and analysis of healthcare-acquired and community-acquired infections to identify trends and implement corrective actions.
Setting and monitoring system-wide, unit-specific, and physician-specific goals related to reducing healthcare-acquired infections.
Leading workplace hygiene initiatives, including TB screening, vaccination programs (e.g., flu and pneumonia), and adherence to Core Principles of Infection Prevention and Control.
Participating in national collaboratives and ensuring accurate external reporting to the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and other quality organizations.
Addressing infection trends, outbreaks, or non-compliance through targeted education, interventions, and counseling for staff, volunteers, and medical personnel.
Providing comprehensive education and training on infection prevention protocols to staff, residents, and their representatives.
Supporting monthly interdisciplinary performance and quality improvement processes, including participation in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives.
Attending and contributing to daily Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) meetings, weekly Facility Infection meetings, and monthly QAPI meetings to ensure alignment with facility goals.
Collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on facility-acquired infections and managing the Antibiotic Stewardship Program to promote responsible antimicrobial use.
Managing and maintaining vaccination program logs, including flu and pneumonia, and organizing wellness days to promote resident and staff health.
Conducting daily rounds across all departments to inspect infection control practices, environmental cleaning, and compliance with protocols.
Communicating with local health departments and submitting required reports in a timely and accurate manner.
Reviewing, updating, and implementing infection prevention and control policies and procedures to reflect best practices and regulatory standards.
Supervising nursing staff, ensuring clinical care standards are met, and providing mentorship to promote professional development.
Performing additional duties as assigned to support the overall mission of the facility.
To excel in the role of Infection Preventionist/Nurse Supervisor, R.N., candidates must possess:
A current and active Registered Nurse (R.N.) license in the state of Illinois.
Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) is required; candidates without certification must commit to obtaining it within 90-180 days of employment through an accredited program.
A minimum of two years of experience in a long-term care (LTC) setting, with demonstrated expertise in clinical nursing and infection control practices.
Specialty training in Infection Prevention and Control through accredited continuing education programs.
Strong observational skills to identify potential infection risks and non-compliance during daily rounds.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to educate staff, collaborate with stakeholders, and prepare detailed reports.
Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating self-direction and initiative.
Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals, including physicians, facility leaders, and public health officials.
Proficiency in data analysis and reporting, particularly for infection surveillance and Antibiotic Stewardship Program management.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing infection control and long-term care facilities.
Leadership experience or potential to supervise and mentor nursing staff effectively.
Salary Range: $75,000 - $90,000 annually, depending on experience and certification status.
