Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking an Information Systems Engineer to design secure, mission-focused information systems and the applications, services, and components that support them. This position offers the opportunity to shape innovative solutions for high-impact space and national security missions, working across a broad portfolio of technically challenging projects. This role is centered on system design and architecture, not administration or operational support. The selected candidate will be responsible for following SDL’s Information System Engineering procedure to translate mission and customer needs into well-engineered system designs that can be confidently implemented and operated.
Responsibilities include working with stakeholders to identify and document customer requirements, security and compliance obligations, and relevant industry best practices, then translating those inputs into well-architected information system designs. The selected candidate will understand how systems progress through the full lifecycle, from proposal and concept through design, implementation, and operational deployment, and will evaluate architectural alternatives and produce clear engineering artifacts that guide implementation teams in building solutions that meet defined requirements.
This is an on-site, non-remote position for our North Logan, UT location.
Key Responsibilities:
Responsible for designing complex, highly available information systems and supporting their implementation to ensure mission success
Provides clear, detailed guidance on selecting and implementing the most efficient solutions to meet business needs, including future capacity, facility requirements (such as floor layout, power, cooling, and pathways), network connectivity, data storage, backup, and monitoring
Gather and synthesize system requirements from internal and external customers defining operational requirements including integration with other systems or components
Works with cross-functional teams to convert requirements into complete, workable system solutions that account for technical, schedule, and cost constraints, while also evaluating and recommending viable alternatives
Acts as a multi-discipled engineer that serves as a subject matter expert for AWS cloud systems
Follows all applicable SDL engineering processes
Assists in enhancing current engineering processes
Serves as a peer reviewer for complex information systems designs
Responsible for engineering documentation of assigned systems and solutions
Conducts research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards
Provides technical expertise on projects and proposal efforts
Provide expertise in defining and implementing best practices to meet or exceed mission needs
Expected Outputs (as needed):
Requirements decomposition
System Designs and Diagrams
Network Architecture
System cost estimates
Trade and alternative studies
Work breakdown structures
Customer responsibility matrix
Risk analysis matrix and risk management plan
Security architecture and boundary definitions
Cloud reference architecture
Infrastructure as Code
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in related engineering science and 10+ years of relevant experience, or a master’s degree and 8+ years of relevant experience, or a PhD and 4+ years of relevant experience
5+ years relevant experience architecting, designing, and engineering information systems – Candidate will be asked to talk through these experiences
The ideal candidate is proactive, self-directed, and motivated to take ownership of system design challenges.
Demonstrated experience designing cloud technologies, including relevant certifications
Strong hands-on experience designing or implementing cloud and hybrid systems in AWS GovCloud or AWS commercial regions (or equivalent)
Familiarity with AWS Well-Architected Framework
Experience deploying and managing cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM, Bicep, or equivalent)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to perform engineering trade-offs between customer requirements, schedule deadlines, program funding, and engineering best practices
Ability to work effectively in a team environment on collaborative efforts involving both internal and external team members
Competent in managing budgets and schedule
Must be a U.S. citizen with and active TS clearance
Must be able to travel, though not a normal expectation
Valid CompTIA Security+ (or equivalent) is required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire
Preferred Qualifications:
Active Top Secret (please disclose any clearance when applying as all are beneficial)
Strong understanding of networking, identity, security architecture, and system integration
Experience migrating or integrating on-premises systems with cloud-based services
Experience with diagramming tools and MBSE methodologies
