Job Summary
The Social Services Specialist Ensures quality programming and provision of structured recreational and socialization activities. Designs groups, activities and events of an educational, therapeutic and social nature to improve the skills of individuals receiving Crisis Stabilization services. Also, assesses needs and interest of Crisis Stabilization (CSU) and/or Children’s Crisis Stabilization (CCSU) patients to develop resources, make arrangements and implement plans that will assist the patient in their recovery and post-discharge environment.
The crisis stabilization units provide emergency psychiatric services. Most patients are admitted involuntarily to the facility via the Baker Act, the mental health act of Florida. The normal length of stay on the unit for patients is typically 3-5 days. Due to the types of services provided, crisis stabilization units are a fast paced working environment and present employees with challenging and rewarding opportunities. Employees work together and support one another in a friendly, team oriented atmosphere.
Responsibilities
- Plans, schedules and conducts therapeutic educational groups on variety of population specific topics.
- Manages and administers the token economy program. Reviews recommendations periodically.
- Orders and maintains activity supplies for groups and programming via the purchasing department or obtaining goods in person
- Assists primary clinician in directing individuals in obtaining goals established within the treatment plan
- Performs daily documentation reflecting observations of individual’s in group activities. Documentation should include the following: level of participation, interaction, socialization and recreational skills.
- Completes initial and ongoing assessments of the patient and his/her post discharge environment.
- Serves as a member of the Multi Disciplinary Treatment Team in order to develop the Treatment Plan/Discharge Plan and assist the patient in achieving desired goals.
- Develops resources that are individualized and appropriate to support successful functioning in community/targeted environment.
- Maintains administrative records.
- Assesses and monitors for risk, symptoms of trauma, and indications of abuse, neglect and/or abandonment. Uses appropriate reporting mechanisms.
- Discharges patients from the Duval County e-portal when patient is discharged from MHRC.
- Maintains communication with supervisor relative to problems, unusual events as well as successful achievements.
- Facilitates appropriate transportation for patients upon discharge.
Qualifications
- In order to be considered, candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services field. Experience with the mental health population preferred.
- The Social Services Specialist must be able to manage work assignments, complete tasks in a timely, accurate manner with minimal supervision, and interact therapeutically with patients and their families.
- Candidates will need a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs, email and the use of the Internet.
Position Details
This is a Full Time Days position: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm.

Mental Health Resource Center, Inc. (MHRC) is a nonprofit organization that provides a wide range of behavioral health and social services to the community. Included in MHRC’s service array are 24-hour emergency services and inpatient psychiatric services for children, adolescents, and adults. Outpatient services include medication management, care coordination, case management, intensive case management team services, counseling, psychosocial rehabilitation, an adult therapeutic family program, state hospital liaison services, mental health court, multidisciplinary forensic teams (MFT), jail-based diversion services, a Co-Responder Program with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the Link-to-Life suicide prevention program, and services that assist individuals in obtaining benefits such as Social Security Income, Social Security Disability Income, Medicaid, food stamps, and housing. In addition, UF Health Jacksonville contracts with MHRC to manage the hospital’s adult inpatient psychiatric unit.
MHRC also operates eight Florida Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) programs for adults with severe and persistent mental illness, located in Clearwater, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Kissimmee, Rockledge, Tampa, and Winter Haven, as well as a FACT Lite program providing Linking, Advocating, Treating, Transitioning, Empowering & Recovery Support (LATTERS) services in Jacksonville. The two FACT teams located in Jacksonville serve residents of Duval, Clay, and Nassau counties.
