Job Description - Installation & Integration Technician

The expected hiring range for this position is:

$37.67-$48.70.

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such the scope and responsibilities of the position, qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

About the Role: 
The Fermilab Accelerator Division (AD) seeks an Installation and Integration Technician to support, and rapidly growing projects to help build, test, and maintain complex electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems. This role involves hands-on work like wiring, soldering, assembling equipment, setting up tests, and troubleshooting problems. It also includes keeping records, writing instructions, managing parts, and following safety rules. 


What your day-to-day as an Installation and Integration Technician at Fermilab will look like:

  • Apply advanced technical knowledge to fabricate, assemble, calibrate, operate, test, repair, and modify complex electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems.
  • Hands-on experience wiring cables, systems, and enclosures with precision, ensuring proper cable management and high-quality crimping/termination techniques.
  • Demonstrated expertise in soldering, cable assembly, chassis wiring, and terminating fiber optic communication links.
  • Assist in the construction and assembly of experimental and support equipment; prepare test setups and verify functionality using diagnostic tools.
  • Familiar with standard shop tools, including drills, saws, punches, and related equipment.
  • Support beam instrumentation operations and testing, including rack layout, cable routing, equipment setup, system integration, and performance validation.
  • Skilled in using electronic test equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, digital voltmeters, pulse generators) for system-level troubleshooting and repair.
  • Prepare setups for testing phases and validate operation using diagnostic tools.
  • Develop, review, and maintain formal drawings, schematics, technical specifications, and assembly documentation.
  • Contribute to integration documentation, QA/QC travelers, test procedures, and results to ensure traceability and compliance with quality standards.
  • Author best-practice procedures and maintain accurate technical records in databases, spreadsheets, and logs, compile safety and technical reports.
  • Manage procurement and inventory of technical parts, supplies, and equipment; coordinate with vendors to expedite deliveries and resolve technical issues.
  • Ensure adherence to FESHM safety protocols, ES&H regulations, and laboratory best practices.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, safety, and documentation standards.
  • Participate in planning and decision-making for technical projects, including design selection, layout, cost estimation, and scheduling.
  • Available to work flexible and extended hours, including on-call support for 24/7 facility operations on a rotating basis.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.


Skills and Attributes for Success: 
HS degree (or technical certificate or equivalent) plus 12+ years of advanced expertise and experience in a highly technical function of strategic importance to a Laboratory project or experiment (e.g., cryo, radio frequency, radiation protection, clean room, etc.).

Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrated and sustained experience in the assigned area.
  • Possesses and applies advanced knowledge of electrical, mechanical and/or ES&H technology concepts, practices, and procedures from extensive experience or academic study.
  • May be required to legally operate a government vehicle

Please note that the described work arrangement is subject to change based on business needs and is not guaranteed to be final. 

  • Onsite: This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from our Batavia office.
