We are seeking an enthusiastic professional who is passionate about teaching others for a full-time, 12-month CDL Instructor with expertise in commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements, and adult workforce training. The successful candidate will deliver theory, range, and behind the wheel (BTW) instruction, ensuring compliance with FMCSA 49 Part 380, Subpart F instructor qualification standards.
This position also serves as a lead instructor/coordinator, supporting FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR) compliance, assisting with curriculum development, ensuring training vehicles and equipment are properly maintained, building industry partnerships, mentoring adjunct CDL instructors and coordinating audits and documentation.
Responsibilities include advising students, developing and evaluating curriculum, assessing student performance, supporting the college mission, participating in committees and engaging in professional activities.
The position requires the ability to travel, between campuses as required.
Nature of Work
The CDL Instructional Specialist reports directly to the Dean of Workforce, Technical and Community Education. Some responsibilities may be delegated by the Department Chair.
The primary duties include:
- Delivering FMCSA-compliant CDL Theory, Range and Road instruction
- Ensuring full adherence to all ELDT requirements
- Maintaining FMCSA TPR instructor qualifications and program documentation
- Mentoring adjunct CDL instructors when assigned
- Ensure PM of vehicles, maintain equipment and training ranges
- Support program recruitment and industry engagement
Summary of Responsibilities include:
Teaching & Instructional Responsibilities
- Develops syllabi outlining course requirements, objectives, and ELDT competencies
- Selects textbooks and instructional materials aligned with FMCSA theory curriculum
- Incorporates driving simulators and VR technology trainers into the
- Prepares and delivers Theory (classroom/online), Range, and Road training in accordance with FMCSA and institutional standards.
- Teaches pre-trip inspections, coupling/uncoupling procedures, backing maneuvers, shifting, hazard perception, rural/urban driving, and safety procedures.
- Provides instruction consistent with catalog descriptions and defined course
- Creates an engaging learning environment that supports student involvement and professional behavior.
- Documents and evaluates student progress through quizzes, skill evaluations, performance checklists, and final assessments.
- Submits final course grades by required
- Maintains student documentation required by FMCSA’s Training Provider
Student Advising & Support
- Maintains availability for student guidance and support outside scheduled class
- Advises students on program progression, CDL licensing requirements, and industry
- Helps students understand safety standards, professionalism, and employability
Curriculum & Program Leadership
- Participates in the development, revision, and assessment of CDL
- Ensures alignment with FMCSA 49 CFR Part 380 ELDT theory and BTW content
- Develops pre- and post-tests and analyzes outcome data to support program
- Supports academic policy development and institutional
- Participates in college committees, faculty meetings, and commencement
Compliance & Documentation
- Ensures all training is conducted according to ELDT
- Maintains accurate student records for FMCSA
- Supports college compliance with FMCSA Training Provider Registry
- Ensures vehicles, simulators, and equipment meet safety and operational readiness
Industry Engagement & Program Development
- Builds relationships with trucking companies, carriers, and industry
- Promotes the program to prospective students and
- Assists with advisory board meetings and industry feedback
Safety & Operational Responsibilities
- Maintains strict adherence to CMV safety
- Ensures daily vehicle inspections, range safety practices, and hazard
- Reports mechanical concerns, defects, or facility issues to the Dean/Department
- Protects students and equipment through safe operation and sound instructional
Experience
In addition to the knowledge/education, the following related work experience is typically required for this position. An equivalent combination of education and recent, related experience may be acceptable.
Required:
- Two years of meeting FMCSA instructor qualification requirements in 49 CFR 380.605;
- Two years of CMV driving experience requiring a CDL of the same/higher class
- or 2 years of BTW CMV instructor experience.
- Candidates must possess a clean driving record with no disqualifying offenses in the past two years.
- Candidates must have experience operating commercial motor vehicles safely in diverse conditions.
Preferred:
- Experience at a community college or workforce training institution.
- Experience teaching CDL or ELDT courses (theory or BTW).
- Experience coordinating CDL programs, equipment or compliance.
Certification Requirements
- Valid drivers license
- Valid CDL of the same or higher class being taught, minimum Class A
- Current Medical Examiner's Certificate
- Clean MVR and PSP background checks
- Preferred Instructor-training certification, NCCER, OSHA 10/30 or related credentials.
