Job Description - Instructor - Math

Job Summary


The college instructor teaches in discipline areas in which he or she has specific training and


competence. The instructor is expected to plan, organize, and teach in a manner that encourages


development in harmony with the school’s mission, and values. He or she also promotes and directs


successful student learning in keeping with the learning-centered values and goals of the school.



Nature of Work


The college instructor will be directly responsible to the Dean of the program and/or Vice President of


Academic Affairs. Some authority of the specific Vice President/Dean will be delegated to the Division


Chairperson with whom the instructor will work cooperatively in the best interest of the college and


its students.



Summary of Core Responsibilities


· Possess thorough and accurate knowledge in field/discipline.


· Develop instructional materials; plan and organize instruction to enhance student learning;


prepare the syllabi; and teach classes in a way that encourages student learning.


· Meet classes as scheduled.


· Be accessible to students through e-mail, phone, or scheduled office hours or at other


times.


· Evaluate student work and maintain accurate records of students’ academic standing.


· Provide students constructive, encouraging, and corrective feedback in a timely manner.


· Respect the confidentiality of student information; refrain from discussing or releasing such


information except within recognized limits.


· Demonstrate integrity and positive interpersonal and communication skills.


· Be able to teach one or more of the following courses: Math 101 Quantitative Reasoning,


Math 104 Math for Trades, Math 107 Intro to Statistics, Math 109 College Algebra, Math


110 Trigonometry, Math 210 Statistics and the Enhanced parts if needed.


· Should communicate and collaborate with other math faculty; use common assessment


tracking questions for the final assessment and report the tracking results on time to the


faculty in charge.



Summary of Specific Responsibilties


· Develops syllabi that clearly outline the course requirements, rationale, goals, and objectives.


· Selects textbooks and other resources for the class.


· Prepares class sessions and assignments to help students grasp course content and how it


integrates with overall student learning outcomes for the course.


· Teaches courses according to the catalog descriptions and in accordance with defined course standards and outcomes.


· Creates a learning environment that encourages student involvement and participation.


· Documents students’ attendance, participation, and academic progress by giving and grading assignments, projects, quizzes and/or examinations that lead to a final grade.


· Submits course grades to the Registrar by the assigned date.


· Is accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods of time for counseling and mentoring students in matters related to academic success, goals, and development.


· Functions as an official academic advisor, counseling students about course, academic sequence, and program selections.


· Maintains and disseminates current information pertaining to services available to students throughout the school.


 · Participates in and contributes to curriculum development by planning, developing, and evaluating new and existing courses and curriculum.


· Participates in the development and implementation of academic policies, guiding principles, objectives, and functions in accordance with the philosophy of the school.


 · Participates in faculty meetings and staff meetings, serves on committees, and participates in other activities which further the college’s mission.


· Participates in Commencement Exercises.


· Is familiar with and maintains behavior and actions consistent with school policies.


· Continues professional development and growth according to personal needs and certification requirements.


· Make sure that student evaluations are administered near the end of each semester.


· Performs other responsibilities requested by supervisor.


· Represents the school positively to prospective students and supporters.



Professional Development


· Compliance training is to be completed routinely and timely.


· Participate in additional professional development opportunities through LinkedIn Learning


and professional organization affiliations.

  • Excellent instructional skills

  • Outstanding organizational skills.

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment is crucial.

  • Ability to supervise, coordinate and evaluate industrial training programs.

  • Must possess excellent communications skills.

  • Ability and willingness to market the program and classes to industry stakeholders and potential clients.

  • Principles of supervision including employee training and performance evaluation.



Education


The education, experience, aptitudes, skills, etc., for instructional positions differ by type of academic


or vocational program. Refer to job announcements for specific job specifications.



Academic Requirements:


A Master’s degree in field of instruction is required or 18 graduate credit hours in discipline.



Instructors may be assigned to courses in which they possess a combination of educational and


practical experience.



College instructors must possess a minimum of a master’s degree in their teaching field from an


accredited institution.



Experience


In addition to the knowledge/education, the following related work experience is typically required, for this position.  An equivalent combination of education and recent, related experience may be acceptable.



Teaching, supervision, or administration 1+ - Preferred



Master's degree in field or 18 graduate credit hours in discipline - Required



License or Certification


Valid Driver's License - Required



Preferred campus to be Raleigh County or Greenbrier Valley Campus
