JOB SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision, teach or team-teach four sections of ethnic studies per semester based on our ethnic studies framework and principles, as well as mentor a cluster of students.  

Requirements

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Develops and teaches ethnic studies classes for mixed 9th and 10th-grade students based on UHS’s ethnic studies vision, principles, and framework 
• Collaborate with other ethnic studies teachers to maintain alignment of skills, competencies, and content of the courses
• Collaborate with Responsive Education teachers to continue developing the program
• Serves as a mentor to a group of 10-14 students from 9th through 12th grade and sits on a grade-level team
• Attends and presents at occasional evening and weekend school events 
• Actively participates in the full life of the school, which can include but is not limited to: mentoring, sponsoring affinity groups, coaching, sponsoring co-curricular clubs, and involvement with our Breakthrough SummerBridge program
• Vigorously engage in their own professional development
• Establishes community relations by maintaining open dialogue with all of the school’s constituencies
• Is familiar with and complies with all policies and regulations as put forth in the school’s documents
• Since safety and security are everyone’s responsibility, take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, faculty, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities
• Performs other duties as assigned

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Ethnic Studies or significant course work in Ethnic Studies or a degree in a related field from a four-year college or university required
• Coursework or professional development in curriculum and instruction or an education degree preferred

• Competence in the content area and pedagogy specific to the developmental needs of Middle and High School-aged students

• Ability to create an active learning environment that supports understanding, passion, and creativity

• Demonstrates knowledge and skill in preparing lessons to appeal to a variety of learning styles, needs, and accommodations
• Demonstrates skill to use appropriate formative and summative assessments and strategies in the classroom
• Commitment to teaching the whole child
• A working understanding of UDL, UbD, and Grading for Equity concepts
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with all constituents in the school community
• Ability to maintain confidential information
• Ability and flexibility to use Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suites, learning management systems, online meeting and conferencing applications, and operating Audio/Visual equipment

SALARY

Salary is based on a scale that is tied to years of relevant experience. Current full-time instructor salaries run from $82,348 (step 1) to $156,449 (step 40).
