Job Description - Instructor of Low Strings

Department:

The University of Mississippi Department of Music’s mission is to prepare students for professional careers by offering bachelor’s degrees in music education and performance, master’s degrees in music education, performance, choral/orchestra/wind conducting, collaborative piano, musicology, ethnomusicology, and music theory; and a PhD in Music Education. Students entering our programs become part of a vibrant community led by a distinguished and enthusiastic faculty, with 34 full-time and 3 adjunct members dedicated to teaching, research, and performance. Thus, our students (ca. 150 majors) receive the rigorous individual attention necessary to develop their full potential in the superb classroom facilities of our renovated music building. As a Department within the College of Liberal Arts, we are also committed to offering stimulating courses and performance opportunities for non-majors.

Job Summary:

The Department of Music at the University of Mississippi invites applications for a 9-month faculty position (non-tenure track) Instructor of Low Strings (cello and double bass).

Job Description:

Persons with the rank of instructor shall be hired for teaching duties but shall not be tenure track. The contracts will be renewable at the discretion of the University.

Teach applied cello, applied double bass, perform as cellist or double bassist in faculty ensembles, instruct string methods, support activities within the string area and the University Orchestra, play an active role in recruitment, and participate in end-of-the-semester juried exams. Evidence of a secondary area of teaching expertise is desirable, e.g., music education, eclectic styles or jazz, music theory, or music history.

Job Responsibilities:

Candidates for the position must have earned a Master of Music degree in Cello Performance, Double Bass Performance, or String Pedagogy. 


  • Teach applied cello, applied double bass, perform as cellist or double bassist in faculty ensembles;
  • Instruct string methods;
  • Support activities within the string area and the University Orchestra;
  • Play an active role in recruitment; and
  • Participate in end-of-the-semester juried exams.
