Intermediate Level Machinist/Programmer has proven documented experience in setting up, trouble shooting, and operating all phases of CNC Mill & Lathe Machining Centers as well as manual mills and lathes. A successful employee will have proven experience as a CNC operator with minimal supervision and must be willing to work with others that they interact with to resolve problems and meet customer requirements.    The department currently utilizes (Mori Sekik NL1500 & 2000 - Mori Seiki SL 154’s) Bar Feeder and Chucker’s, HAAS VF1’s and have plans to upgrade the department to include HAAS VF-4. Additional equipment to learn will be machining operations on Nidec Gear hobber as well as set up. Additionally, there will be training on a GH Induction Heat Treat machine and set up of recipes for processing pinions and spur gears. The employee must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Must be able to read and comprehend general business documents, computer printouts, and drawings. Must have strong organizational skills, a desire to learn, and be detail oriented. Must demonstrate ability to handle new and changing tasks, follow instructions and defined procedures, and show a willingness to learn and train. Must be able to work well with others and be a productive team member. All positions in the department are machine operators. The ability to program multiple axis lathes, milling and drilling machines and demonstrating ability to enter and edit programs to ensure proper machine operation is a plus.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • Set-up and operate all CNC Mill & Lathe machining centers to complete daily work orders. Very familiar with installing, adjusting and securing three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, fixtures, workpieces, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, stock pushers and indicating vices.
  • Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs.
  • Experience with G Codes & M Codes is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret component prints or drawings, make average to complicated arithmetic calculations, and resolve technical problems.
  • Will often collaborates as directed with Manufacturing and NPD Engineers and can work independently to develop manufacturing/machining processes from drawings to create a quality part meeting specifications and project lead time requirements.  These NPD projects will often utilize our manual machining centers. 
  • Provides feedback to engineering and manufacturing personnel as new products are developed, and new procedures are implemented.
  • Improve manufacturing processes through fixture design, CNC programming upgrades, perform (what if scenarios) with different tools/speeds/feed rates.
  • Designs and manufactures fixtures to hold parts on a specific machine.
  • Determines proper tooling to be used for various required base metals. Establishes optimum feeds and speeds. Understands the effects of these variables on the machining process.
  • Verifies settings by proficient use of precision measuring devices (i.e. micrometers and calipers), first-run part, sample workpieces, adhering to international standards.
  • Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
  • Conduct first piece & hourly inspection to ensure quality standards.
  • Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
  • Successfully demonstrates trouble shooting and problem-solving ability.
  • Understand, support and assist the preventative maintenance requirements of CNC Mills/Lathes and Implements maintenance based on defined schedules.
  • Understands the 5S and Workplace Organization of the CNC Mill & Lathe work-centers and demonstrates ability to maintain each work area within these guidelines.
  • Ability to manage software, files, solid models, and other interfaces associated with programming software. 
  • Train and assist machine operators in various work centers as directed by Team Lead or Supervisor.

 Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Trade school degree (preferred)
  • 5+ years’ experience as a CNC Machinist
  • G-code & CAM software i.e. Mastercam software
  • Advanced training, certification, education a plus.

 Physical Working Conditions:

  • Job requires repetitively lifting average weight objects with repetitive bending and stooping.
  • Occasionally be required to physically lift, pull, push, or apply force up to 50 lbs.
  • Job may require physical exertion such as long periods of standing.
  • Job may require above average agility and dexterity.
  • Job may require extended hours and/or overtime may be required based on workload.
  • General work area is in a production environment where moderate levels of noise and/or heat and cold occur.
