Job Description - Interventional Pain Technologist/Nurse


 

The Interventional Pain Technologist/Nurse provides specialized clinical and procedural support for interventional pain management services. This role works exclusively in the procedures area and is responsible for patient preparation, procedural assistance, equipment management, documentation, and post-procedure care in collaboration with licensed providers. This role is essential to ensure excellent patient outcomes and positive experience. 

Key Responsibilities: 

Clinical and Patient Care 

  • Room patients, gather medical history, vitals, and document intake. 
  • Ensure all consents and legal paperwork are filled out accurately and to its entirety. 
  • Draw labs as clinically indicated. 
  • Assist patients with dressing, transfers, and general activities of daily living. 
  • Prepare patients for procedures including positioning, sterile prep, and procedural time-outs. 
  • Assist providers during interventional pain procedures such as injections, nerve blocks, and other image-guided interventions. 
  • Anticipate provider needs and maintain procedural flow and patient safety throughout cases. 
  • Monitor patients during and after procedures and report changes in patient condition to the provider. 
  • Provide post-procedure instructions and patient education as directed. 

Imaging (RT(R) only) and Technical Functions 

  • Operate and assist with C-arm fluoroscopy and ultrasound during interventional pain procedures, as applicable to licensure and scope. 
  • Prepare, clean, and maintain procedural equipment and supplies. 
  • Ensure proper radiation safety practices are followed for patients and staff. 
  • Perform room turnover and ensure procedure rooms are stocked and ready for use 
  • Upload and retrieve imaging using PACS. 

Documentation and Communication 

  • Accurately document clinical and procedural information in the EMR 
  • Ensure required consents, time-outs, and procedural documentation are completed and filed appropriately 
  • Communicate effectively with providers, schedulers, and clinic leadership to ensure continuity of care 
  • Prepare charts prior to procedure date of service by ensuring orders and clinic notes align, reviewing medications and clearances, and verifying any and all other provider preferences and protocols are being met. 
  • Adhere to HIPAA and Release of Information guidelines at all times 

Mentorship and Team Support 

  • Support onboarding and training of new procedural staff as assigned 
  • Participate in clinic initiatives, quality improvement activities, and required education. 
  • Maintain regular attendance in accordance with company policy 
  • Assist with inventory management of procedural supplies, injectables, and medications as applicable, along with any other daily duties as assigned. 

Infection Control and Safety 

  • Maintain strict adherence to sterile technique and infection control standards. 
  • Prepare instruments and equipment for cleaning and autoclaving per policy. 
  • Comply with all safety, regulatory, and organizational policies related to procedural care. 

Requirements

 

RT(R) 

  • Current ARRT RT(R) license. 
  • Experience with C-arm preferred 

Nurses (LPN, RN) 

  • Current RN or LPN license 
  • Experience in procedural, surgical, or pain management settings preferred. 

All Candidates 

  • Current BLS Certification. 
  • Completion of all organization-mandated education and certifications. Successful and timely completion of all Iowa Ortho-mandated education. 
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, sterile technique, and procedural workflows. 
  • Proficiency in EMR systems and clinical documentation. 
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in a fast-paced procedural environment. 
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
